Tired of having the same arguments over and over? Wondering why you seem to be stuck in cycles with your partner, friends, colleagues or yourself? How often do you find yourself wondering, "what happened to that sweet loving person I fell in love with? How did Godzilla end up in my bed? Or worse yet, is that Medusa staring back at me in the mirror"? OK then.....welcome. I'm Joni Altshuler and after 30yrs in practice, I continue to be inspired and often awe struck by the people who walk thru my door.

Life can change in an instant, and not always for the better. After a trauma it can be hard to sleep, concentrate, or feel safe, even after the danger has passed. Some people wonder if they will ever be able to have a day without thinking about what happened.

What I know for sure is it can be hard to be human while it can also can be awe-inducing and wonderful. In my 26 years of practice I have come to find that what I enjoy the most in my work is supporting clients in sitting in this duality and finding peace in the presence of their lives. We can try so hard to run from our tough emotions in all kinds of adaptive human ways, but when we practice accepting them the deep healing can begin.

My practice in Maine is permanently closed as I have relocated to the Boston area where I will be doing short term counseling with newly diagnosed adults who are neurodivergent, having been formally diagnosed or self diagnosed. My many years of experience working with the neurodivergent community has provided me with the ways and means in helping to understand and manage an individual’s diagnosis, how it affects those around them and attain a sense of balance and control. I am also available for consultation with the medical community including mental health providers, law enforcement and school systems.

Do you experience the outdoors as a place of healing and comfort? Can you imagine meeting with your therapist outside for support? To learn skills to improve your life and overall well-being? I love the outdoors and am excited to offer the option of meeting in person outside for therapy in the Portland and Scarborough areas, with telehealth as a backup when the weather does not cooperate. Indoors or outside, throughout the year, you can expect a supportive and comfortable atmosphere in which to heal and grow when you and/or your partner, or your child or teen meet with me for therapy.
