Gestalt Therapists in Portland, ME
I have training in Gestalt and Emotion-Focussed Therapy and am rooted in humanistic, intersectional feminist, psychodynamic, and attachment theories.
Welcome! I am interested in how a therapeutic partnership can be a laboratory and a refuge; a place for you to engage curiously with yourself and your relational capacity. I find that over time this practice of being together and being curious can catalyze our intuition and rearrange patterns of stuckness. I believe we can learn to relate more clearly, deeply, and kindly with ourselves through being witnessed and attended to with care. I find that intimacy with our own emotional landscape can be the bedrock of a grounded relationship to self and others.

I have advanced training in Transactional Analysis, Redecision Therapy, Gestalt, Mind-Body approaches, Family Systems, Energy Therapy, Personality Adaptations, Cognitive Behavioral and Dialetical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
Often people begin counseling to change something and feel differently. Working together we'll explore what may be getting in the way today and work to find ways of dealing with life on a day-to-day basis more resourcefully. When relevant, we'll also look at the past to understand how your history might be part of what you are experiencing currently and to support you in making desired changes for yourself. Part of my role in working together is to bring into your awareness what presently has been outside of your awareness. I use a blend of Transactional Analysis, Redecision Therapy, and Energy Work.

Is your life turning out the way you planned? Are your personal relationships succeeding? Are you finding the right career for you? Do people know the real you? Too often we lose track of how we exist each day. Depression over past mistakes or anxiety about what might happen in the future prevent us from being who we really want to be in the present. The goal of counseling is to help you develop a better relationship with your 'self' in order to improve your relationships with others. Check out my video on YouTube to learn more about my approach.

Hello, thank you for taking time to be here. Therapy is an investment in time, personal commitment, and money. My practice has shifted since COVID to seeing less people, for 60 to 90 minutes, and not accepting insurance. Hakomi, Mindfulness, Somatic Psychology, CBT and other modalities are part of the support provided as people move through grief (death, terminal illness, divorce...); healing past trauma, re-surfacing or ready to liberate from, the lies they embed in our narratives; and reclaiming the day to day wakefulness of being. Anxiety, depression, problems at the macro level, benefit from mindfulness and action, and therapy.

I offer presence and connection to support couples and individuals towards greater authenticity and fulfillment. I understand well the tremendous capacity for the psyche to accommodate unresolved trauma by intricate and patterned coping means. This tempers my approach towards one of gentle courage with clients. Together we learn to find a pacing that creates safety for making contact with what hurts. I am deeply interested in supporting the recognition of your intrinsic capacity to grow towards wholeness. As a counselor, I bring unconditional positive regard, a belief in individual strengths, and an unwavering commitment to you. I am genuine, empathic, intuitive, and passionate about helping you. I use person centered therapy first and foremost; meaning that I'm always looking for the good in you, believing in you and supporting you to make your life feel it's most fulfilled. For each person that's different - for some it's "happiness", for some it's being present or mindful, and for some it's managing symptoms so other things can be balanced in their life. From this support, I hope to create a space where you can pursue your needs.

Pursuing therapy represents a desire to heal. Whether dealing with a new challenge or an old wound, my work with clients is focused on supporting the process of healing and learning to "let go" of the harmful patterns that get in the way of feeling satisfaction, peace, and fulfillment in our lives and relationships. As a psychotherapist, my goal is to create an environment in which you can pause, reflect, and feel supported in acknowledging the emotions that many of us learn to avoid, dismiss, and push down.

Gestalt Therapists
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.
How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.
How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.
Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
