I have additional training in Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD.
My approach is compassionate and collaborative, providing a supportive environment to identify and challenge the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that may be keeping you stuck. What meaning do we attach to our experiences? How do we make sense of what happens to us? How are our relationships shaped by our expectations? How does our way of thinking affect our way of being? Together, we will explore ways to create positive change in your work, your relationships and your life.

People seek out psychotherapy or psychoanalysis for various reasons—sometimes to solve a particular problem, more often in hopes of remedying a deeper sense of unease. The conversation may begin with a specific source of pain and then evolve to encompass the whole of one's life. We speak our desires and fears, our pride and shame, fantasies, regrets, and more. It's a process in which we make some sense of our perplexing repetitive patterns; equally, it's a way to learn to bear what is ultimately incomprehensible. In time, we can come to terms with our history and find new avenues of enjoyment, purpose, and action.

I help people overcome the challenges they face in everyday life: work or school, mood, stress, relationships, trauma and abuse. If you're not finding satisfaction or joy in life, if you feel stuck, or if you keep running into mental, emotional, or behavioral blocks, I can help. I work with adults and also specialize in helping college/university students and the unique challenges that go with college life: balancing academic and social demands, pressure to succeed, fitting in, "adulting," and possibly most importantly, becoming the person you want to be.

I have experience working with trauma, attachment, depression, anxiety, transitions, ADHD and LGBTQIA+ clients.
Hi, I'm Hannah! It can feel challenging to think about starting therapy and overwhelming to know what brings you or your family to seek support. What I know about therapy is that the best fit is usually based on the relationship between the therapist and the client (you). A lot of the time therapy is about how you feel talking to and sitting with that person. I am accepting clients for telehealth sessions only. I look forward to connecting with you!

My passion is in helping couples and individuals find their purpose again and find what makes life meaningful! My favorite thing is watching love grow again, people finding their voices, and feeling freed from their trauma.
We often look at what we have in our lives and tell ourselves that nothing’s wrong, while simultaneously feeling as though nothing is right. Feelings of uncertainty are common during periods of transitional life changes. While new beginnings are often viewed as exciting, they are also filled with doubt and the unknown. The what if's begin to creep in, and the future feels paralyzing. It is a scary place to be, and you don’t have to be there alone.

My practice focuses on working with people 18 to 99 on trauma ( PTSD), emotional dysregulation, sensory processing needs, life stress, depression and anxiety issues, maternal mental health (postpartum depression, pregnancy & perinatal grief), and family treatment.
I want people to know that therapy begins with choosing to take the step of exploring yourself, an event that has occurred, STRESS, relationships, loss, burnout. That big next step involves developing a trusting and genuine rapport with your clinician. I invite you to reach out and begin that process with me and know that it can be done with humor, understanding, and a very strong believe in the fact that we are not perfect, that we are not made to go it alone all the time, and that we all need somewhere and someone that it can be all about you for a moment.

Hi! I'm Dr. Karen Klein. I'm a licensed Psychologist in Maine. I've been working in Maine for 38 years and have a variety of experiences working in Mental health Centers, nursing homes, and private practice. I've also worked with many different types of people but mostly see individuals who are depressed or anxious or experiencing significant trauma from some past event. I enjoy working with all individuals, especially with couples. When I worked at the Mental Health Center I developed the Marriage and Family Clinic where I trained doctoral students from all over the country in ways to do therapy with couples.

I have a particular interest in those who are struggling with their relationships and sense of meaning, not to mention those who have experienced trauma and need healing and hope that religious institutions are not equipped to provide.
Providing pastoral counseling to individuals and couples for over 20 years within a religious context has provided a wealth of knowledge and experience since transitioning to the clinical side of counseling. This transition comes at mid-life with comprehensive experience in organizational leadership as well as spiritual formation and direction. Having been married for 25 years and having adopted 2 children, I have a passion for strengthening marriages, families and relationships.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
