We have all struggled with something in our lives, and all too often we are kept busy by the stressors and demands of everyday life. Therapy can be a space to take pause and work to understand our individual challenges. As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I can help you explore your emotions, thoughts, and experiences to gain insight into "stuck points" that you may be facing.

For the past 16 yrs I've worked primarily with children & adolescents* on the autism spectrum. Of course working with children means working with parents; partnering with parents is essential so that the progress we make in sessions carries over to everyday family life. There is nothing better than finding the "secret" to reaching a child and seeing them blossom before your eyes. It might not happen overnight, but believe me, it happens. To make the most progress, children should begin therapy as early as possible. * I can see adult clients and couples, wkdays between 11 am - 2 pm.

Things have a way of not working out the way they we thought they would. The stories of our lives begin in the families we are given with all of their foibles and experiences. Pages that become chapters of pain, trauma or loss can engulf the one that feels trapped in the narrative. After a plot twist of epic proportions, I left a 16-year career in the intelligence community and began a new chapter. I’ve had to confront the sources, rewrite the narrative, consult the author and find myself in the pages. The refinement process can be a horrific one but in the truth, freedom is found. Together, we can find healing.

Life is a struggle. While we all have had joys to celebrate and call our own, no one escapes the slings and arrows of life's misfortunes. I believe we always respond to those misfortunes in ways we believe is best for us at the time. Sometimes we have clarity. We can proceed in a way that validates who we are and what's in our best interest. Other times, we may not know what to do or act in a way that does not turn out as well. We suffer as our past ways of handling this situation no longer fits to meet our present needs.

So it’s gotten to this point. you’re on Psychology Today looking for a therapist. Maybe it’s the 1st time or the 7th time, but things are finally at the point where something needs to change. Are you dreading work everyday? Getting in arguments with your partner about the smallest things? So frustrated with the kids that you’re sitting in the car longer and longer every day when you come home from work? If you’re still reading I’m going to ask you to pause for a moment and breathe in as you count to four … hold your breath as you count to seven … now exhale as you count to eight.

Whether you're going through a life transition, experiencing something difficult (externally or internally), or want someone you can bounce thoughts, feelings, and ideas off of, I'm here for it. When we take the intentional time to look at how whatever is going on for you is impacting your mental, emotional, physical, and relational health, and how that might be preventing you from reaching your goals, we can not only gain a lot from the therapy process, but also enjoy it. We can work together to talk it through, break down barriers, generate insight, and create positive change in a supportive environment.

I use techniques from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based therapies.
Individual therapy is a way for people to explore their thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental and healing therapeutic setting. You may aspire toward growth and development, may seek to learn ways to cope with ongoing stressors, or may be searching for ways to achieve mind-body connectedness. I consider myself to be eclectic in my approach to psychotherapy, and will often use components from different treatment modalities based on your needs. My goal is to help you feel a sense of empowerment over your psychological well-being.

I believe that working with the whole person - body, mind, spirit- is essential for finding peace and living out your full potential after trauma. I believe that people don't need to suffer as we do and that there is hope for healing.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
