I have worked in medical settings and I am very comfortable collaborating with your primary care doctor to help you reach health goals that are impacted by stress or substance use.
It takes courage to ask for help and with that in mind I maintain an atmosphere that is free from judgment. Whether motivation for therapy is internal, or someone in your life is asking you to seek help, I will work with you to find a strategy for making healthier decisions. I work with individuals (adults), couples, and families experiencing challenges like anxiety or depression for many years as well as individuals who have only recently experienced stressful circumstances related to health, work, home, school, or relationships. I am an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and offer a supportive environment for identity exploration.

I have extensive experience working with people struggling with substance use, out of control sexual behavior, loss of sense of self, and major life changes.
Often we are faced with decisions that will have a big impact on the course of our life. Even if we already know the better option, it can feel totally overwhelming thinking about all it takes to make the change. Whether it's an addiction, loss of sense of self, or religion, everything else can slip to the background making it hard just to get through the day. When we work collaboratively in therapy, you will experience new things about yourself and what your priorities really are while letting go of what we are told we should be or do.

My areas of specialization include substance use and addiction, anxiety, depression, and various mood disorders.
Do you feel a lack of connection with self and others? I recognize that life can be challenging for many reasons and that asking for help and support is difficult. Self-reflection and developing coping skills alone can seem foreign and daunting, the good news is--you don't have to do it alone. My goal is to assist people in exploring interpersonal issues and ways to remove barriers, such as substance use and self-deprecating tendencies.

I have practiced throughout Maryland with patients struggling with substance use misuse and disorder and moderate to severe alcohol use.
Through my 15+ years in this work, I feel I am best equipped to support individuals who are struggling with alcohol/ substance use or misuse that may be attributed to co-occurring mental health disorders, past trauma, or unknown reasons. I have worked with a variety of patients ranging from those experiencing minor struggles that may be impacting relationships to those hitting 'rock bottom' and lacking hope. If you are interested in changing any aspect of your drinking or substance use behavior, together, we can make that happen.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
