I see my job as helping you reduce suffering with rational, practical solutions for the person you are, given the situation you’re in.
We all suffer, and we all have to cope with it. I can help relieve people of suffering caused by maladaptive patterns of feeling, thinking and behaving that they have been conditioned to repeat over time. I do this by building a relationship with them, then allowing that relationship to be the template for healthy interactions in life and a realistic perception of themselves and their situation.

Are you a teenager or a young adult? Do you feel lost, anxious about major life changes, stuck in bad habits and repetitive thought patterns, or terrified of the future? Perhaps you're struggling in school and you don't know why, or you're trying to figure out a sustainable career in a tumultuous economy. Maybe something you thought you understood no longer feels right, like your gender, your sexuality, or your belief system.

Congratulations on taking steps toward establishing a more fulfilling, healthy, and successful life! In therapy, I work collaboratively with you to enhance your understanding of the internal and environmental factors that impact life, emerge as relational patterns, and potentially impede success. I offer a safe, comfortable space for the exploration of your concerns, ensuring you feel heard, respected, and understood. I enjoy working with diverse clients: of varying backgrounds and therapeutic needs. Though trained as a generalist, I sought additional education, practica, and research opportunities to develop the specialties of 1) counseling traditionally marginalized populations, 2) program development and evaluation, and 3) consultation and outreach.

Navigating life’s ups and downs can be as much a challenge as it is a privilege. The support of a caring presence outside your circle of daily influence can help as you move through the tricky spots. I have professional and/or lived experience with anxiety, depression, trauma, career transitions, and institutional betrayal. I served as a Title IX coordinator/ DEIB professional for over a decade so I am uniquely qualified to support people impacted by discrimination, implicit bias, sexual violence, intimate partner violence, and harassment. I am also well suited to support people working in higher education and/or legal professions.

I start where the client is but look at their family history to get an idea of their foundation. My clients often are depressed and/or anxious so I come up with a treatment plan that meets their abilities. I treat teenagers and adults, individuals, couples and families. I have a background in domestic violence and often help victims in emotional and physical abuse cases. I also help people learn anger management techniques to control their tempers.

“Life is hard.” This is a quote that I heard from my then 6-year-old niece. She was talking about the unfairness of having to room with her sister, but her words ring true no matter what age we are. Sometimes we start to feel weighed down by stress, anxiety, depression, or the expectations of others, among many other things. Sometimes we feel stuck and don’t know what to do. It can be hard to reach out for help, but there is no shame in it.

Working with a good-fit therapist has the biggest impact on getting what you need out of your counseling experience. I work with folks who have invested in therapy for years, sometimes decades, but who haven't experienced significant change, in their relationships, their ways of operating, their stress levels, etc... So if you're motivated to gain insight into your stuck places, experiment with new ways of thinking, acting, and relating, and experience sustainable growth, let's connect!

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
