I have practiced throughout Maryland with patients struggling with substance use misuse and disorder and moderate to severe alcohol use.
Through my 15+ years in this work, I feel I am best equipped to support individuals who are struggling with alcohol/substance use or misuse that may be attributed to co-occurring mental health disorders, past trauma, or unknown reasons. I have worked with a variety of patients ranging from those experiencing minor struggles that may be impacting relationships to those hitting 'rock bottom' and lacking hope. If you are interested in changing any aspect of your drinking or substance use behavior, together, we can make that happen.

Our responses to life experiences can certainly leave us feeling stuck, choiceless, and out of control. There can be a sense of feeling lost and unsure of how to move forward. You continue moving through it, and you may even feel you’ve been functioning but not really living…This would feel incredibly unsettling to anyone. As a member of the military for over 20 years, I understand that feeling, and the impacts of minor and major life changes. These changes shift our world view, our relationships, and how we see ourselves. You may have tried multiple ways of coping, but traditional approaches haven't produced the change you want.

I’d like to introduce you to something called your Autonomous Healing Center. It’s the part of you that knows there’s more to life than whatever you're dealing with now—struggling with food, body image, overwhelming feelings that never seem to go away, or a life that’s “just okay”, but isn't really doing it for you. For some of us, the Autonomous Healing Center speaks very quietly or in ways we don’t quite understand. However, it’s also the part that influenced your decision to start looking for a therapist today. So, here’s some good news: you’re already connected with the part of you that knows how to heal. Cool, huh?

If you're looking for growth and/or healing- if you feel motivated by pressing questions about life, specifically your own- then let's start talking! I aim to be a relational and interactive self-help book, with a focus on existential themes. Sessions with me feel friendly, but still personal, analytical, and occasionally emotional. I’ll likely try to teach you words, phrases, concepts, and practices I find useful. Think of me as a consultant for thinking and feeling your way through life.

The first steps to a counseling session can be scary, but it is also a courageous act in understanding yourself and living a more engaging life. My philosophy in providing care has always been "helping others help themselves." I believe that each individual has the ability to change and grow in their journey. In sessions I provide a safe, compassionate, and collaborative space. I will also acknowledge that our world is vastly different and more chaotic than it was a few years ago - covid pandemic, racial injustice, climate change - and I will do my best to offer you some direction in these collective struggles.

Do you feel a lack of connection with self and others? I recognize that life can be challenging for many reasons and that asking for help and support is difficult. Self-reflection and developing coping skills alone can seem foreign and daunting, the good news is--you don't have to do it alone. My goal is to assist people in exploring interpersonal issues and ways to remove barriers, such as substance use and self-deprecating tendencies.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
