Primarily, I implement Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy in working with families, the Gottman Method with couples and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing with individuals.
I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families. When thinking about the stages of change, I prefer to meet clients where they are; and am willing to work at a pace they feel comfortable with at the start of treatment. Individuals come to treatment with a myriad of goals and needs. Specific issues may be difficult to pinpoint. However, one of my goals in the overall process is to see clients who are open to changing their current dynamic or patterns, with the hope of a more favorable outcome.

Are you questioning the role of alcohol/drugs in your life or the life of a loved one? Are you feeling anxious, depressed, or just unsettled and wondering if alcohol, substances, or addictive behaviors are contributing? Perhaps you're in early recovery and need support from someone who understands? Often we address our mental health while avoiding discussing alcohol, drugs. or other addictive behaviors. Or, we try to address addictive behaviors without really dealing with underlying issues which led to the addictive behaviors in the first place. The truth is we need to address both simultaneously in order to make real progress.

If you have been struggling with a health concern such as pain, insomnia, or GI distress, you may feel demoralized by the limitations of medical treatments for many health issues. You may not know that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for a number of medical conditions. As a clinical health psychologist, I specialize in chronic illness, chronic pain, disorders of brain-gut interaction (DGBIs), health anxiety, insomnia, and stress related to navigating the health care system. Therapy can help you to quiet the brain’s natural threat response to symptoms, foster resilience, and embrace life once again.

Therapy works best when there is a safe and supportive therapy relationship, where you can explore the issues that brought you into therapy in a nonjudgmental environment. I also know that many people come to therapy to make some changes. For this reason, I combine traditional talk therapy with skills-based methods that teach you specific ways to address your concerns. I will work with you to meet your goals while also helping you to understand yourself better, and to understand the patterns that might sometimes get you stuck.

I am here to support people who worry that their therapist wishes they would lose weight. I welcome experiences of chronic illness, diet culture, and neurodivergence to be processed through trauma-informed and relational perspectives. My clients tend to be deep thinkers whose experiences have been discounted by the healthcare and educational systems. From my experience in community organizing, I focus my work on challenging ableism, fatphobia, and other systems of oppression. Together, my clients and I navigate what to do with the realization that continually shrinking ourselves is harmful and unsustainable.

Waitlist for new clients
As a Certified Nature-Informed therapist, I integrate nature-based therapeutic methods into my work with clients. This evidence-based approach integrates the restorative power of the natural environment with other established treatments. Once we’ve developed rapport in the office, I offer outdoor sessions held walking and/or sitting at parks and on trails in Takoma Park and Rock Creek Park. Pushing beyond traditional confines of a physical counseling office or telehealth, together we can utilize space and time in nature to boost emotional regulation and best help work through anxieties, challenging times, and life transitions.

Life transitions and stressors, anxiety, depression, and trauma can often get in the way of feeling like yourself and doing what is best for you. These barriers can mean losing interest in activities you once enjoyed, regularly feeling burned out or on edge, feeling disconnected from your friends and family, or simply not feeling like yourself. With my confidential, professional, and supportive care, we can understand and treat your mood-related symptoms.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
