One Spirit Counseling is founded on my belief that everyone has the power to heal themselves. My goal in counseling is to help people find their power and connect with their ability to heal and become whole. In addition to my Pastoral Counseling degree from Loyola University, I have a Master of Public Health and am a Certified Health Education Specialist. My public health and education background speak to the physical, behavioral, and environmental health that each of us require to survive while my mental health and spiritual training help bring healing to emotional wounds.

Carroll Creative Therapy is a psychotherapy practice serving clients of all ages, and provides evidence-based play therapy for children. For older children and teens, we combine strategies and wisdom from play therapy along with traditional talk therapy, often using age-appropriate tools like the creative arts, video games, and social media. Our work with adults tends to look more like traditional talk therapy, but incorporates many of these same elements through conversation. We are also proud to support gender-diverse and LGBTQ+ clients of all ages, and have a deep knowledge of the community.

In my work with couples and families I engage Emotionally Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy while conducting Attachment focused work.
Sometimes we realize that we feel helpless, overwhelmed, or angry with our place or circumstances in life. If we are struggling to find comfort in our partner after infidelity, if we have trouble letting go of anxiety, or if we have found ourselves using substances in an unhealthy way, then it might be time to find someone we can trust to help us find that path through. Recognizing that you want change in your life is both powerful and frightening, but with support and care I believe that you will be able to begin to understand just how capable you are to build the life you want and deserve.

Through client-centered practices such as: Talk Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Creative Therapy (art, music, narrative), and Dialectic Behavioral therapy we can navigate the relationship within yourself and with others.
Seeking out therapeutic services is healthy for our mind/body/soul connection. Just as we go to the gym to keep our bodies healthy, or puzzles to keep our mind sharp, we go to therapy to keep our connection between our mind/body/soul. Further, relationships are the center of connection: how we relate to others (family, friends, coworkers,) and the relationship we have with ourselves. It is my privilege to sit with you (or your family members) while we navigate the roadblocks and successes that make your life experience uniquely yours. It is my hope that in through this exploration and work, we can improve your relationships.

Utilizing a strength-based focus, I integrate techniques from various theories and modalities such as: cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, internal family systems, mindfulness, attachment and narrative therapy.
Finding a good therapist is like shopping for a good pair of shoes. Why, you might ask. It’s all about the fit. You usually choose shoes that are most comfortable and suit you best. Whether you may have gone to a therapist before or have never been – whether you had awful experiences in the past or none at all. Successful therapy is about finding the right fit; about finding a relationship where you have a safe space to bring any and all of your feelings and challenges.

I use an eclectic, person-centered approach that includes: Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, and Narrative Therapy.
Have you ever wondered, "How did I get here?" Life has a way of taking twists and turns. Within each of us lies a story; one we tell ourselves and live out, whether it serves our highest good or not. But your past does not have to dictate your future. New chapters are still being written. During our work together, you will create a new story that will be one that is big enough to contain all your strengths, hopes, challenges, and all that makes you unique. From following big dreams to winning everyday small victories, I am committed to helping you succeed and feel more alive!

I work with those struggling with confidence/self-esteem/self-compassion, those interested in working on emotion identification and regulation, and those struggling with inattentiveness/focus difficulties. I help those who want to build up their coping skills toolkit. I am interested in working with those striving to identify and live aligned with their values and eager to engage in therapy. I am comfortable with people who might be the first generation willing to engage and trust the therapeutic relationship. I want to work with someone who wants to find balance and acceptance in a life of suffering and joy.

Thank you for visiting my profile. I am passionate about helping teens and adults find and maintain balance in their lives. My practice is about enabling individuals to recognize and address the obstacles that are keeping them from finding that balance. I work with adolescents and adults. I am especially interested in helping adolescent girls develop the skills and confidence to face the ever increasing pressure in their "girl" world (social media, relational aggression, body image, etc.), in a positive way. Therapy dog available for those clients that wish to use as part of therapy.

I enjoy working with individuals who are struggling to overcome obstacles and cope with triggers which may impede their ability to fully engage with life in a wholesome way. Maybe conflict is getting in the way of having fulfilling relationships. Maybe life's stressors are overwhelming the senses or triggering painful emotions. Maybe coping skills are limited and resilience feels unattainable. Goals of therapy can include identifying and coping with, in a safe and healthy way, those obstacles that are keeping a person stuck, as a start.

Narrative Therapists
Is narrative therapy evidence-based?
Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.
How long does narrative therapy last?
Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.
Does narrative therapy work?
Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.
What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?
Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
