Sometimes we just feel stuck: stuck in the past, in a bad relationship, or not able to make a decision. This could have its origins in a childhood trauma or a series of events that chipped away at self esteem over a long period of time. I assist clients in reprocessing past events to perceive them in a less threatening or emotionally painful way. I believe that we already have the solutions to all our problems, but sometimes they are buried deeply. I am willing to be honest as well supportive while helping clients reveal the answers within themselves.

Life is filled with loss, yet we live in a grief-illiterate culture that wants to bypass pain at all costs, leaving us unprepared to navigate both death and non-death losses when they come. When looked at through the lens of loss, many emotional states that plague us – anxiety, depression, trauma – can be tied to unresolved grief in our lives. Every loss must be grieved and in finding a path through the pain, healing can begin.

Energy therapies, channeling work, and expressive arts techniques are powerful modalities through which I support clients in creating the authentic lives they most want.
Now Accepting New Clients (2023): The stressors of modern living create noisy interference in the “telephone line” to our highest self (often called the soul, spirit, unified field, universal consciousness, etc.). Through my intuitive psychotherapy practice, I cast my mystical gifts through the lens of my expertise as a licensed clinical social worker. Marrying the two allows for optimum balance between divine clarity and therapeutic processing and integration work. Clients benefit on a soul level while remaining anchored in practical application tools for everyday living.

I seek a genuineness to my therapeutic relationships, finding this with the language of expressive arts integrated with IFS (Level 2), EMDR, bilateral processes, Neurosequential trauma informed approaches.
I have been an art psychotherapist since 1982. I currently work with adolescents and adults, using a trauma informed integrated approach for the impact of developmental trauma with its comorbidity, dissociation, and attachment issues. Art gives voice to what is stored implicitly within sensory somatic means. My client and I foster the relational benefit of the compassionate therapeutic alliance using the power of the creative process with a strength based focus. Our collaborative goal is to resolve the impact of the past; building resiliency, internal wisdom, and self compassion. I am an approved art therapy Supervisor in Maryland.

I prefer to take a child-centered approach and utilize developmentally appropriate techniques including play therapy, expressive arts, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
My philosophy when working with children and teens is that they need to feel heard, valued, and supported. I believe that they need to understand that their thoughts and feelings matter. When meeting children and teens, I aim to provide a safe and comforting space to work through their emotions and help navigate challenges that impact their daily life. I have spent years working with children, teens, and their caregivers in schools and their homes especially in the field of special education. I am a certified school social worker and have a special interest in working with children and teens who are neurodivergent.

Life is full of ups and downs — we all know that. But sometimes, it can feel like we’re running a marathon that seems to go on forever. We start to feel stressed, burnt out, and hopeless. We may find ourselves wondering, "What happened to my relationship?", "Why can’t I stop repeating this unhealthy behavior?", "Wasn’t this new job supposed to make things better?" Whether it’s our work, relationships, or simply our own quirks getting in the way of our well-being, there comes a time when our confusion and pain become too much to bear alone. We feel like giving up and often don’t know where to go for support.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
