In art therapy, you are invited to express thoughts and feelings in a creative way.
You may be seeking therapy because you need extra support coping with the stress of daily life. Maybe you are working hard to regulate intense emotions or to feel like past traumas are truly in the past. I believe in working together to tailor an approach that honors your unique needs and fosters a safe space for you to heal and grow. I am licensed as a counselor and an art therapist, so our work together could be traditional talk therapy, as well as art therapy. Whether you consider yourself an artist or haven't touched a crayon since grade school, art therapy can be a dynamic way to learn healthy skills and find greater meaning.

I also employ mindfulness techniques as well as expressive therapies such as art therapy, journaling and poetry.
Sometimes we just feel stuck: stuck in the past, in a bad relationship, or not able to make a decision. This could have its origins in a childhood trauma or a series of events that chipped away at self esteem over a long period of time. I assist clients in reprocessing past events to perceive them in a less threatening or emotionally painful way. I believe that we already have the solutions to all our problems, but sometimes they are buried deeply. I am willing to be honest as well supportive while helping clients reveal the answers within themselves.

I use holistic, healing-centered interventions including narrative exposure therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and expressive art therapy.
I provide individual and group mental health therapy for issues including complex trauma, anxiety and depression, emotional regulation, navigating relationships, body image, perinatal transitions, and adjusting to chronic illness. I specialize in working with gender and racial minorities, who have been routinely overlooked and underserved but still have the desire to show up for themselves- individuals who want to move in a positive direction with their mental health but may not know exactly how or what that looks like.

Whether you need art therapy for your own inner child healing or therapy for your child or teen, I’m here to help your family flourish and reach their full potential.
Imagine your mental health as a garden—what would it currently look like? Are there overgrown weeds taking up too much space, symbolizing past traumas or emotional blocks that stifle your growth? Perhaps delicate seeds, representing unexplored aspects of your inner world, are struggling to break through the surface. Just as a gardener carefully tends to their plants, nurturing your inner child is essential for fostering a vibrant and balanced inner landscape. I am an art therapist, artist, and outdoor walk-and-talk therapy enthusiast, specializing in providing clients with care through creative expression, nature, and movement!

To do this, I mainly use a client-centered approach and aspects of Psychodynamic Art Therapy, Jungian Art Therapy, Trauma-Informed Therapy, Positive Psychology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Theory, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Art therapy is not just about being able to express yourself but also being able to process and explore what is made. My role as an art therapist is to help with the processing and exploration through meeting you where you are, actively listening to what you bring into the space, and providing you with the art materials and directives that best suit your needs and where you are at. As an art therapist, it is important for me to provide a safe space, active listening, empathy, cultural humility, and open-mindedness to clients, as well as being trauma-informed.

I have been an art psychotherapist since 1982. I currently work with adolescents and adults, using a trauma informed integrated approach for the impact of developmental trauma with its comorbidity, dissociation, and attachment issues. Art gives voice to what is stored implicitly within sensory somatic means. My client and I foster the relational benefit of the compassionate therapeutic alliance using the power of the creative process with a strength based focus. Our collaborative goal is to resolve the impact of the past; building resiliency, internal wisdom, and self compassion. I am an approved art therapy Supervisor in Maryland.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
