I combine psychodynamic, person-centered, and cognitive-behavioral therapy approaches to create an environment that initiates exploration, insight, and action.
Hello, I am Andre Johnson, a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) and Occupational Therapy Practitioner (OTP) seeing clients virtually in Maryland. I began my career in health care to work with people who struggled with emotional and cognitive disorders, something I remain passionate about now. My focus on emotional, neurocognitive, and cognitive disorders led me to the question, “How can I impact and motivate the lives of my clients with emotional and cognitive disorders in a meaningful way?”

Their issues can include spiritual confusion, perinatal struggles, relationship concerns, family conflict, boundary needs, and/or a desire for greater self-awareness. They desire true change, which comes with a combination of empathy, education, and constructive feedback, if necessary, from the clinician.

I use a psychodynamic approach.
Do you have an endless running track of thoughts that do not seem to reach a resolution? Is it easier to connect to your thoughts and harder to know how you actually feel? This can be anxiety related. Therapy can be a great way to understand this and much more. Seeking out therapy takes a lot of courage and emotional intelligence. It's truly one of the best ways to understand one self and work towards growth and change. I work with clients to help them gain deeper insight into their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. This deeper understanding can provide the tools needed to reduce anxieties and improve relationships with others.

I am a licensed social worker and have completed a doctorate in clinical social work with application of psychodynamic theories.
As a psychotherapist, I am committed to providing a supportive, safe, and judgment-free environment for my clients to work through present problems and address unresolved issues from the past. My goal is to help individuals better understand the causes of their problems and identify patterns, develop better self-awareness and self-acceptance, form healthier relationships and improve the overall quality of their life. Understanding the impact of the past and making peace with it are important components of treatment as one's past can continue to haunt the present time and influence it in ways that are not always evident to us.

My approach is intuitive and integrative in nature, grounded in psychodynamic thought, attachment theory, mindfulness and growing in energy psychology.
You’re an accomplished woman with a profound knack for juggling a lot of responsibility. Because of your competence and your compassion, you are often sought out by others for help. Secretly, you might feel like a fraud yet still power through and appear to defy all odds. Yet something has shifted, and the weight that you’re carrying is becoming too burdensome. While the cracks might not be showing on the outside, on the inside you can feel things beginning to fall apart. Your mental or physical health is showing signs of wear and tear. You're scared of the consequences of letting go and overwhelmed by the prospect of holding on.

While my training is primarily psychodynamic, I use and work with a variety of modalities, depending upon the individual needs of my clients.
Do you find yourself repeating the same behaviors over and over again, hoping for a different outcome? This is a pattern that can be changed, and as a therapist with over 30 years of experience, I can help you to make these changes. By understanding and working through how one's early experiences influence one’s current behaviors, lasting changes can be made. Concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and relationship issues are among the areas I treat. I believe in the importance of developing a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment in which we can explore your feelings.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
