I specialize in psychodynamic processes and utilizing CBT techniques to alter the way clients think, feel, and behave.
My ideal client is motivated for therapy. Their issues can include spiritual confusion, perinatal struggles, relationship concerns, family conflict, boundary needs, and/or a desire for greater self-awareness. They desire true change, which comes with a combination of empathy, education, and constructive feedback, if necessary, from the clinician.

Do you feel overwhelmed? Do you overthink? Do you treat your mind as a vault of secrets and emotions that are hurting you? The journey of life is full of ups and downs. There is no way to predict what may happen or how those experiences may impact you. The things we experience are not always easy to communicate with others and sometimes we do not want to be in fear of being judged. Therapy can help you navigate through life when unexpected trauma resurfaces, when change feels scary, or any issues that cause your emotions to become imbalanced.

My ideal client seeks a therapist who understands the complexities of their lived experiences. They may be struggling with issues like trauma, addiction, stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, identity struggles, life transitions, existential concerns, or oppression. They would come to me because they need a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore their emotions and experiences, seeking personal growth, well-being, and fulfillment. They choose me for support in achieving a fulfilling life, recognizing my capacity to guide them through personal growth and empower them to access their transformative potential.

Choosing a psychotherapist can be a challenging process and we often find ourselves doing it when we are already stressed. I strive to create a tranquil, accepting atmosphere in my work, while my patients also say they enjoy the laughter that we can sometimes find in the midst of our explorations. My approach focuses on identifying patients' existing strengths and increasing their capacities to cope with stress so as to lead more satisfying lives. I take a "best-tool-for-the-job," integrative approach, drawing from a range of psychotherapeutic orientations, all supported by solid science.

My name is Kelini Coker and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in both Maryland and Virginia. I work with mostly adults and couples. I typically work with people impacted by life transitions, narcissistic partner/parental abuse, as well as 1st/2nd generation immigrants in navigating cultural and societal pressures. I wanted to be a therapist because I felt there was a need in my community. I wanted to be a safe and familiar space that dispels the idea that we should keep our worries and "problems" to ourselves.

Ideally, I'd treat clients with a trauma history. Someone with a mixture of short and long term trauma. My ideal client is eager to learn and wants to find a way to become their own safe space. Someone who wants to learn how to set and maintain healthy boundaries, find out their triggers, and treat themselves with patience.

Hi there, I’m Britney Lamp, LCPC! As a licensed therapist working in the field for the last 14 years I have grown to understand that therapy is so much more than just helping individuals address concerns or issues in their lives. Hello! My name is Heather Williams. I'm a Clinical Social Worker with over thirty years' experience helping individuals, couples, and families navigate difficult situations. My approach is solution focused. Clients often feel better after the first session. I often give simple behavioral homework based on our discussions, so that you can experiment with changes that will help you move forward. My focus is on your strengths, and on finding the solution to your problems, rather than on focusing on the past. As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, I also help you understand the connection between your feelings and thoughts.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
