Anxiety, OCD and trauma show up in many ways. Chronic self doubt or uncertainty has you overthinking the "what ifs" like letting people down, making mistakes, contamination or causing harm. You may feel tense, scattered, procrastinate tasks, be easily frustrated or get stuck when stressed. You're sick of spending life in your head battling obsessive thoughts, losing time engaging in compulsive, repetitive behaviors (like checking, counting etc) just to feel certain. You want to learn how to be present and let go. I specialize in anxiety, OCD and trauma to help you overcome fear, find peace and be confident to live life beyond worry.

I have an unusual combination of specialties as both a clinical counselor and a spiritual director. I absolutely love working with couples and am trained in the Developmental Model; a system that follows the stages of relationship development. I also have specialized training to treat anxiety disorders like Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Panic Disorder and utilize ERP for OCD and In Vivo treatment where appropriate. I also have a Divinity degree and a background in a faith-based non-profit, which make integrating a client's faith a particular joy in therapy.

My ideal client is a good fit for my services, someone you enjoy working with, and someone likely to benefit from therapy. They generally share similar values, beliefs, and goals and feel comfortable working with the therapist. Additionally, working with your ideal clients can be personally rewarding as you build relationships and help them achieve their goals. Also, identifying and attracting your perfect client can benefit you and the client by ensuring that therapy is a good fit for both of you. Finally, this allows you to become an even better therapist to your ideal clients, and the positive cycle continues.

Do you feel overwhelmed? Do you overthink? Do you treat your mind as a vault of secrets and emotions that are hurting you? The journey of life is full of ups and downs. There is no way to predict what may happen or how those experiences may impact you. The things we experience are not always easy to communicate with others and sometimes we do not want to be in fear of being judged. Therapy can help you navigate through life when unexpected trauma resurfaces, when change feels scary, or any issues that cause your emotions to become imbalanced.

I believe counseling should focus on supporting the client in building a life worth living. Only you know what life "fits" you best, but it is helpful to have someone along for that journey, to point out lessons along the way! My goal is to help you identify what in your life keeps you stuck, what roles and values fulfill you, and to minimize the former while maximizing the latter. What kind of life "fits" you? Let's find out! "The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases." -Carl Jung. www.invisiblethreadcounseling.com

I primarily work from a trauma-informed Cognitive Behavioral approach to help clients understand how daily thoughts fundamentally shape their emotions, behavioral patterns, and responses to life’s challenges. I believe in incorporating skills and practice into the therapy process to build distress tolerance, tackle avoidance, and reframe toxic thoughts. My approach starts with developing a personalized treatment plan with my client based on clear, measurable, meaningful goals. While I specialize in working with first responders, I enjoy treating diverse populations and have 15+ years of experience in community mental health.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
