My approach to therapy is eclectic and person-centered. It focuses on bringing to light beliefs and ways of being that no longer support you as you seek to move forward and change. Based upon your specific needs and working within your comfort level, I may utilize some of the following approaches: time in nature, meditation, journaling, internal family systems parts work, somatic practices, and art-making. I have used these approaches with teens and adults to help bring healing to issues of loss and grief, anxiety, depression, and attachment/relationship issues.

I have been an art psychotherapist since 1982. I currently work with adolescents and adults, using a trauma informed integrated approach for the impact of developmental trauma with its comorbidity, dissociation, and attachment issues. Art gives voice to what is stored implicitly within sensory somatic means. My client and I foster the relational benefit of the compassionate therapeutic alliance using the power of the creative process with a strength based focus. Our collaborative goal is to resolve the impact of the past; building resiliency, internal wisdom, and self compassion. I am an approved art therapy Supervisor in Maryland.

I know you. You are a unique and talented person. You were born with your own skill set and strengths to get through life's challenges. But then something happened. Something that was out of your control. Maybe you lost a loved one, maybe you wound up in a situation that left you stuck in a dark place with no way out or maybe your tendency to worry left you emotionally paralyzed. You feel stuck. You step out into the bright sunny world but only see darkness. How do I know you, you ask? Because we are all like that. We all struggle emotionally at some point in our lives. It is perfectly normal.

You don't need someone to tell you how stressful and challenging life can be. Work is stressful. Parenting is stressful. Marriage is stressful. Given the amount of stress we experience we often have a hard time identifying what is at the core of our problems. I have found that therapy can provide much needed exploration and processing that helps us live more meaningful and fulfilling lives. In a collaborative fashion, I work with each client to find patterns in behavior and language that may not be easily recognizable by the client.

I begin therapy by building a strong relationship with my clients. It is my goal that you feel safe and cared for when we are together, and I do my best to step into your experience with you and feel what you are feeling. Clients find me nurturing and have confidence that I am helping them reach their goals. I enjoy working with couples, children, and individuals. With couples, I help uncover destructive relationship patterns and establish new patterns that bring healing, and mutual satisfaction. With children, I provide play therapy and work as a team with their parents and caregivers to reach their goals.

You just finished a productive day at work and felt pretty good about yourself. Then that voice pipes up. “You probably screwed something up” “Everyone is judging you behind your back?” “You try so hard but always mess up.” “You can’t win.” No matter what you do, this inner critic never stops. Every time your confidence starts to grow, and you consider trying something new, that voice returns to fill you with fear and doubt. It seems like you only know how to focus on the bad and never give yourself any credit for the good. You wish you could somehow silence this part of you, but it feels hopeless. You don’t know what to do.

Through the use of active imagination, sandplay, dream analysis, expressive arts, journaling, and exploration of personal meaning we will work towards improved life balance and integration.
Welcome- I’m glad you have arrived. My dream for creating this practice was to offer you a unique and warm experience where you can relax into their therapy process. Unlike traditional therapy spaces, I utilize my home as a temenos- an enclosed, sacred space, where you belong and are welcomed. I am experienced in working with adults and children, though my areas of clinical interest are in addressing trauma, attachment, and creative/artistic blocks, and life transitions.

The clients I work best with are here because they recognize something does not work for them-they have developed anxiety and/or depression and may struggle with life changes, stress or relationship issues. I enjoy deeper work that may raise questions such as: Who am I? How do I define myself in my environment? Why do I feel lost? What is my greatest desire? How do I find joy in my life? I also like to work with clients to tame their anxiety and reduce their depression. I prefer to work with those over 18.

Sandplay Therapists
What problems are best treated with sandplay therapy?
Research has examined this therapy’s utility in young people and found positive results. It has been shown to be useful for those who suffer from autism, attention deficit disorder, anxiety, and or aggressive behavior. Children who have suffered abuse, neglect, or trauma have also seen improvement through this therapy. Abused children are often fearful and anxious about their safety, making verbal communication more difficult.
Is sandplay therapy suitable for children and teenagers?
Children and adolescents are good candidates for sandplay therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts, let alone the emotions they are experiencing. Through this play therapy, they will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Is sandplay suitable for adults?
This type of therapy can be useful for adults who have difficulties expressing themselves. People who have suffered neurological changes after a brain injury or because of a traumatic event might be good candidates for this therapy. In fact, anything that has had an effect on the brain, such as substance abuse, can make non-verbal sandplay a valuable option.
Does sandplay therapy work?
There have been studies on the effectiveness of sandplay therapy, and it appears to improve difficult behaviors in children. It may also enhance self-esteem and lessen feelings of physical anxiety as well as hypersensitivity. This type of therapy is based on non-verbal communication and may feel less threatening to the individual.
