The modalities I use more commonly include CBT, MBCT, person-centered therapy, psychodynamic therapy, family systems, and relaxation methods.
There are many reasons why you may decide to begin therapy. The important thing is taking the first step toward an opportunity for you to discover ways of building new skills and gaining new knowledge to help you experience life in a more fulfilling way. My goal is to help you build skills to increase self awareness and self acceptance resulting in feeling empowered to reach your goals and improving your sense of well-being. I have worked with clients from children to adults in schools, clinics, and private settings. I believe in providing support in a peaceful and accepting atmosphere.

I am trained as both a counselor and an art therapist. I like to work with clients who have difficulty identifying or expressing their emotions. Art therapy is a way of working that helps you to express and experience thoughts and feelings when words fail. You do not need any artistic skill to do art therapy - just a willingness to explore with a sense of curiosity. I am certified in Internal Family Systems and integrate this approach into art and sandtray therapy.

I employ cognitive-behavioral, family systems, psychodynamic, short-term solution focus, supportive reflection, dialectical behavior, grief and loss therapy, and mindfulness models in my practice.
There is nothing like being listened to and understood on a deep level, with genuine interest, unconditional positive regard, congruence, empathy and acceptance. This is what I strive to offer in therapy, as we explore together your hopes and dreams, your losses and regrets, your longings and fears. Many people come to therapy to free themselves from self-defeating patterns, maladaptive behaviors and the legacy of past traumas, so they can be more truly themselves in relation to others and live with greater satisfaction and meaning.

Using psychodynamic, relational, cognitive, and analytic approaches, my tools include curiosity, patience, empathy, interpretation, and humor.
Listening to clients during early career work as an attorney and then for over 20 years as a psychotherapist shaped my nonjudgmental, analytic approach to understanding and working on issues and concerns. Telehealth sessions with me offer you a safe, private, confidential space to explore your thoughts and feelings around medical, emotional and situational challenges in home, work, school, or social settings. Focusing on you, we develop a working partnership and create a plan to develop and work on your goals, improve your relationships with others, and increase your ability to manage stress and negative emotions more effectively.

My counseling philosophy is based on the empathic understanding of the individual's circumstances and challenges impacting their functioning in life. I believe that insight, working in the “here and now,” addressing short and long-term goals, and acquiring healthy coping mechanisms are crucial to overcome emotional distress and acquire emotional growth. My philosophy as a therapist is that the clients are the EXPERTS and that the therapist is the one that follows the clients’ lead helping them to understand and solve in a healthy way their inner struggles and conflicts.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
