I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing ( EMDR), Somatic, CBT, DBT, attachment-based methods (EFIT), Bowen, family systems, structural, and solution-focused therapy.
The process of finding a therapist can be daunting, but I believe it is a sign of courage and strength to seek help for lasting personal growth and for stronger relationships. My overall perspective about therapy is to show acceptance, compassion and care to all clients; to build safe, warm, trustworthy, and collaborative therapeutic relationships; to apply evidence-based and culturally-competent therapeutic concepts and skills to address clients’ specific needs; and to build upon client’s strength for change. I speak both English and Mandarin and provide immigration mental health evaluations. I am licensed in MD, D.C., and VA.

Cross-trained in EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and DBT; my approach is tailored to each person and what works best for you.
I'm so glad you're here. Do you feel stressed, overwhelmed, and ready for change? We might be good fit if you want to understand why you feel miserable or anxious despite "doing it all". Maybe you are compassionate to everyone in your life, except YOU. Maybe you have been in talk therapy and you are feeling stuck or ready to try something different. I help my clients move beyond talk therapy toward healing recurring negative patterns in their life, anxiety, depression, anger, overwhelm, relationship issues, trouble getting new habits to stick, compulsively using external things to feel better (i.e. work, people, alcohol), and more.

Did you know that 90% of the people who have had previous therapy do not remember what they learned? At the end of each session I ask for your takeaways. I will work in partnership with you as a therapist and teacher. I work with women and men age 18+ who have depression, anxiety, trauma, self esteem or relationship issues. I will ask your goals for therapy. We will look at three major issues: (1) Both negative and positive patterns in your life; (2) the context of your environment and its impact on you; and (3) life's bumps in the road.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
