My approach to therapy involves empowering persons to better understand themselves and acquire the tools to heal and make desired life changes. I utilize a combination of cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic therapeutic orientations in my practice. Consistent with an emphasis on empowerment is my wholistic focus on total well being. I promote balance across all personal dimensions (spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, and social). My life coaching practice draws from a similar wealth of psychological knowledge, however, with more of an educational emphasis. I facilitate the acquisition of problem solving and success orientation skills, aimed at enhancing personal empowerment and life satisfaction.

We come to therapy to change our lives which can only be done by changing ourselves. I believe the most effective changes occur when we can experience and examine our behavior in relation to others. In individual therapy you and I will not only identify and try to understnad how your life experiences have shaped your behavior, but how you and I experience that behavior in our relationship. When I work with couples, I focus on your dynamics of intimacy, power imbalances, money, sexuality, and the impact of family and friends on your couple.

You’re tired of being the “strong one.” At home, on the job, and even among your friends, you’re the one everyone calls when they need a solution. You’re so good at supporting others that no one knows you’re secretly falling apart – no one asks. Maintaining this image is exhausting, but you barely have time to notice the emotions. You bury your feelings with more work, so no one ever sees the real you. Ironically, the one person you never show up for is you. You’re an expert at meeting expectations, but it’s time you started taking care of yourself. It’s been so long. You’re not sure you remember how.

It happened again. You were sitting in traffic, thinking about your day, when panic suddenly hit. Your chest tightened, and you couldn’t catch your breath. Your palms began to sweat, and your face became flushed. You wondered to yourself, "Is everything about to unravel?!" You never know when these overwhelming emotions will hit, and it’s terrifying. You don’t need this added burden right now – between family dinners, work assignments, doctor’s appointments, paying bills, organizing your house, and everything else, things are already so hectic. You hate to let people down, but you can’t keep going like this.

I work with those looking for a little more comfort and ease in their lives. I support those looking for ways to manage stress and anxiety, looking for a better relationship with themselves, who are open to exploring and managing boundaries, and those who aim to heal old (or new) wounds. Additionally I offer clinical supervision to social workers pursuing their LICSW in DC.

You’ve accomplished so much. You have a fulfilling career, good friends, a comfortable income and lovely home. By all appearances things are great, and you feel completely in control in most areas of your life. But relationships are a different story.. they either don't stick or never take off, and they all seem to follow the same pattern - the initial hope and excitement of seeing someone new gives way to doubt, and once you get that sinking feeling, it all unravels from there. You see friends and coworkers getting married and starting families and wonder why it’s so easy for them. "What's wrong with me?"

My mission as a therapist is to create a completely non-judgmental, loving container in which your transformation unfolds. I believe that all mental—and many physical—health “symptoms” are all parts of us with good intentions, calling frantically for our loving attention. I believe in healing, not coping. We are so much more than a diagnosis and a bundle of symptoms; we are so much more than our pain and trauma. I believe that in each of us resides a marvelous, pure, all-loving essence that is the home base of our healing. My role, as the therapist, is to simply guide you there.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
