Hi! I am a clinical psychologist (PhD) trained at Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania. Though I work with many issues, I specialize in treating personality, sleep, and anxiety disorders as well as more unusual/rare/treatment-resistant conditions. I also conduct formal diagnostic assessments. A significant portion of my practice consists of providing clinical supervision or therapy to other therapists. I am currently licensed in MD and VA and can work with people in 37 other states (including DC) through my PSYPACT credential (i.e., via teletherapy).

Ideally, I try to create a comfortable environment so that the client can feel a connection. I realize that one of the hardest things to do as a person, is to admit that you need to talk a problem through with someone outside of your circle of family and friends. When meeting with the client, I try to distinguish where they are and go above and beyond to make the therapeutic process a success.

Bessel van der Kolk once wrote that “trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on the mind, brain, and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present.” I have come to have enormous respect for the wide range of defense mechanisms each of us creates to help us survive trauma and problematic fits with our environment. I enjoy helping others to understand and cultivate compassion towards these parts of ourselves and to build new, more adaptive ways of coping and ultimately thriving.

My ideal client would be someone either navigating life stressors, anxiety, or depression. My client is someone hoping to reconnect with their strengths as well as create a better balance in their life. My client could potentially be experiencing trauma or issues with attachment concerns and relationships. My client expresses their goals of needing to manage emotions better, find balance within their routine, and build more confidence, which is helpful for communication of desires/ interests. The client wants to accomplish these goals for the first time or as a result of transition/trauma.

"Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist" -Eileen Miller. I believe in the creative process as a powerful tool for facilitating self-expression, self-discovery, and self-fulfillment by integrating one's physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. I incorporate a variety of modalities, such as Art Therapy (no prior art training necessary), Play Therapy, and Sand Tray Therapy, into sessions while honoring each client's individual strengths and needs. In the quiet spaces between the chaos of our lives, I understand that there are moments when the weight of the world feels too heavy to bear. Life's journey is marked by unexpected twists and turns, and it's in these moments of challenge that I extend my hand to those seeking support. Anxiety may grip your chest, depression may cast shadows over your days, and the tumultuous waves of life transitions may leave you feeling lost and even hopeless. All you really want is peace within and outside of you, but you are having a hard time with fulfilling that desire.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
