Ideally, I try to create a comfortable environment so that the client can feel a connection. I realize that one of the hardest things to do as a person, is to admit that you need to talk a problem through with someone outside of your circle of family and friends. When meeting with the client, I try to distinguish where they are and go above and beyond to make the therapeutic process a success.

NOTE: I will have an opening starting the week of 11/18. Hi! I am a clinical psychologist (PhD) trained at Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania. I work with many issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, struggling professionals) and specialize in treating personality and sleep disorders as well as more unusual/rare/treatment-resistant conditions. I also conduct formal diagnostic assessments. A significant portion of my practice involves providing clinical supervision or therapy to other therapists. I am currently licensed in MD & VA and can work with people in most other states (including DC) using my PSYPACT credential.

Bessel van der Kolk once wrote that “trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on the mind, brain, and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present.” I have come to have enormous respect for the wide range of defense mechanisms each of us creates to help us survive trauma and problematic fits with our environment. I enjoy helping others to understand and cultivate compassion towards these parts of ourselves and to build new, more adaptive ways of coping and ultimately thriving.

The adolescents I work with struggle with loss related to life transitions: parental divorce or breaking ups are painful and clients need to learn how to express their emotions in a healthy way.
"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." (Viktor Frankl) Many of those I work with are dealing with issues of grief and loss. Others suffer from addictions and desire to embark on a recovery path, or love someone with addictions and need to learn how to take care of themselves. Many are journeying through resolving trauma, anxiety, stress or depression issues. Regardless of your pain, I am invested in your growth, emotional freedom and creating your wellness plan.

As a therapist specializing in women’s health, reproductive trauma and loss, & body image and disordered eating, I am dedicated to providing a safe space for you to find freedom and healing.
Whenever we face change, obstacles, loss, and/or new chapters in life, it's natural to encounter a whirlwind of mixed emotions— grief, anxiety, excitement, & fear. Our internal experiences can become so loud, and unsettling at times, that we can miss out on what is happening right in front of us. Together we can find flexibility & freedom when faced with these challenging life experiences. In addition to helping people cope with anxiety, grief, & life transitions, I work with women who are experiencing body image challenges/disordered eating & reproductive health challenges. Women deserve support when navigating these complex issues.

Finding a therapist is tough. The most important part is finding a good match. And you've already taken the first step. I believe in the healing power of authenticity and self advocacy. People struggle when they lose their sense of power, numb themselves from their problems, and feel trapped in their circumstances. We have within us the power to help ourselves. But sometimes life makes us forget or ignore, what we need. In particular, I focus on grief, LGBT issues, and the challenges faced by young adults. As someone who has experienced grief, identifies as trans, and has survived early adulthood, I can relate.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
