Hi! I am a clinical psychologist (PhD) trained at Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania. Though I work with many issues, I specialize in treating personality, sleep, and anxiety disorders as well as more unusual/rare/treatment-resistant conditions. I also conduct formal diagnostic assessments. A significant portion of my practice consists of providing clinical supervision or therapy to other therapists. I am currently licensed in MD and VA and can work with people in 37 other states (including DC) through my PSYPACT credential (i.e., via teletherapy).

Bessel van der Kolk once wrote that “trauma is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on the mind, brain, and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how the human organism manages to survive in the present.” I have come to have enormous respect for the wide range of defense mechanisms each of us creates to help us survive trauma and problematic fits with our environment. I enjoy helping others to understand and cultivate compassion towards these parts of ourselves and to build new, more adaptive ways of coping and ultimately thriving.

Ideally, I try to create a comfortable environment so that the client can feel a connection. I realize that one of the hardest things to do as a person, is to admit that you need to talk a problem through with someone outside of your circle of family and friends. When meeting with the client, I try to distinguish where they are and go above and beyond to make the therapeutic process a success.

Everyone faces challenges at some point in their lives. I believe the key to enduring these challenges is having a solid anchor to hold us in place amidst life's storms. Whether this be healing from trauma, enduring life transitions, or facing paralyzing tragedy- being fully anchored is where we can find hope. My goal is to compassionately come alongside my clients in a supportive and empowering way. By drawing upon their strengths we will work together to formalize realistic and attainable goals. I believe there is hope for everyone and I feel blessed to intersect with my clients wherever they are in their journey.

I guide and work with clients ages 11-22 to develop a sense of empowerment through therapy, while utilizing mind-body awareness, self-regulation and relaxation techniques, coping skills, and social-skills-training to reduce anxiety, process trauma, increase self-esteem, develop social skills, and provide an opportunity for creative expression.
"Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist" -Eileen Miller. I believe in the creative process as a powerful tool for facilitating self-expression, self-discovery, and self-fulfillment by integrating one's physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. I incorporate a variety of modalities, such as Art Therapy (no prior art training necessary), Play Therapy, and Sand Tray Therapy, into sessions while honoring each client's individual strengths and needs. My experience working with those emotionally distressed and my training in trauma theory supports my belief in every person's innate capacity for healing

Are you consumed with disturbing automatic thoughts, and spending hours chasing, analyzing, reviewing, and giving meaning to the intrusive thoughts? As someone that’s been in your shoes, there is hope and recovery to overcome OCD. I will teach you how to change your relationship with anxiety by looking it in the face and walking towards it instead of walking away. It is easy to stay trapped and believe the false messages that your OCD feeds you. I will teach you how to rewire your brain into no longer believing those false threats that your brain is torturing you with. My treatment approach teaches you how to stop competing

I specialize in adjusting to life transitions and stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma, and navigating and building meaning in their lives.
Have you been in therapy before and it wasn't the best fit? Is this your first time searching for a therapist for yourself or for a loved one? Not sure if your stress in life is “enough” to need therapy? Good therapy is built on a relationship of warmth, empathy, and authenticity. Life can be tough and it can be beneficial to have a therapist who really "gets you" by your side to navigate difficult times. Not all therapy sessions must be intense and serious! I can help you embrace the strengths you innately possess to have joy, laughter, and contentment in life.

I teach practical coping skills that address immediate concerns like overwhelming emotions and anxiety.
Congratulations on seeking help! You have taken your first step on what may be a long but rewarding journey of healing and self-discovery. It takes real courage to face what may be overwhelming fear, despair and self-blame. But you don't have to struggle with the burden of hopelessness alone. Others that suffered in similar ways have gotten help even when therapy has not worked in the past. Whether one struggles with stress, relationship difficulties or crippling self-doubt, therapy is used to identify barriers and cultivate tools that bring fresh perspective and resources to address the problem at hand. Tele-therapy available.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
