You’ve accomplished so much. You have a fulfilling career, good friends, a comfortable income and lovely home. By all appearances things are great, and you feel completely in control in most areas of your life. But relationships are a different story.. they either don't stick or never take off, and they all seem to follow the same pattern - the initial hope and excitement of seeing someone new gives way to doubt, and once you get that sinking feeling, it all unravels from there. You see friends and coworkers getting married and starting families and wonder why it’s so easy for them. "What's wrong with me?"

You’re tired of being the “strong one.” At home, on the job, and even among your friends, you’re the one everyone calls when they need a solution. You’re so good at supporting others that no one knows you’re secretly falling apart – no one asks. Maintaining this image is exhausting, but you barely have time to notice the emotions. You bury your feelings with more work, so no one ever sees the real you. Ironically, the one person you never show up for is you. You’re an expert at meeting expectations, but it’s time you started taking care of yourself. It’s been so long. You’re not sure you remember how.

Although I am an intake and assessment therapist, my ideal client is a woman who is struggling with parenting alone and division of labor despite having a partner. I love working with moms and have a passion for bringing awareness to the married single mom syndrome. I believe women are more than their labor, and I'm on a mission to help women put themselves first.

I find that many people have dealt with so much trauma and disappointment in life that they begin to feel powerless. I know it can all feel like too much at times. The way out isn’t necessarily to fix all the problems in your life, but to learn how to respond differently to them, as your capable, beautiful self. You might wonder what your life purpose really is, or feel as if you’re stuck in the same cycle. Many of my clients have described feeling overwhelmed by the never-ending pressures of life. It might seem that no matter what you do, you can’t get ahead.

“Be gentle with yourself”! That is my motto, as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Maryland. Life circumstances can happen that are completely out of our control, and helping clients develop the tools to handle adversities in life is my passion. Society has placed a stigma on therapy, and my work is focused on helping individuals realize that taking care of their mental health is just as important as taking care of their physical health. The shame in therapy must the removed!

My mission as a therapist is to create a completely non-judgmental, loving container in which your transformation unfolds. I believe that all mental—and many physical—health “symptoms” are all parts of us with good intentions, calling frantically for our loving attention. I believe in healing, not coping. We are so much more than a diagnosis and a bundle of symptoms; we are so much more than our pain and trauma. I believe that in each of us resides a marvelous, pure, all-loving essence that is the home base of our healing. My role, as the therapist, is to simply guide you there.

It’s not just that you don’t rock the boat, it’s that you steady the boat while it's being rocked. And you are nothing if not determined. So why that unsettled panicky flutter in bed? You know, the combo of mild nausea and critical thoughts on loop while sleep escapes you? The truth is, steadying the boat gives you a perception of control. A sense that everything will be okay if you can just keep up the façade of okay. It's familiar, comfortable. But these days the exhaustion is bone deep. At this point you have tried everything from meditation to medication to basic talk therapy filled with homework and more pressure to preform.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
