I have experiences working with a diverse population of individuals, families, and groups. This include both male and female, adolescents, young, middle age, and elderly adults across multiple socio-economic ranges and ethnicities, Africans, African Americans, Asians, Europeans and English-speaking Hispanics. Group counseling diversity includes divorce care of men and women, single parenting, grief sharing, teen problems, domestic violence abuse intervention (victims and perpetrators), and anger management. These experiences have enlarged my awareness that a diverse population encompasses a multitude of belief systems and norm.

How many times have you thought “I am going to focus on me”, and then easily got sidetracked and shifted your priorities to something other than you? Even “I don’t know what else to do”, or “I’m going to lose it if…..”? Often, we spend time caring for any and everything around us, and it’s easy to forget that you also deserve to be prioritized. My goal is to remind you that it’s ok to be ready to start your journey to your healing and wellness, and overcome the trauma, stress, work frustrations, sadness, and anxiety that creeps into our thoughts and ultimately, our daily lives.

Let us be real, life is difficult and even though we can have great days we cannot ignore the stressors and worries that occur in the background of our lives…the kids, marital issues, work, bills, family issues, friendships…the list of stressors can go on. During these times we ignore how this stress impacts our day-to-day functioning and our overall wellbeing. Stress knocks us off-kilter and throws us into a reactionary state and once there, we may not show up the way we want; aligned with our authentic self and values. I collaborate with individuals who find themselves in this situation and want to change how they show up.

I help people uncover the underlying 'stories' and old belief systems that cause them to feel stuck and how they may be reenacting these stories in the present. I enjoy working with individuals who would like to build better systems of internal and external support. I view therapy as a partnership, and seek out clients who are willing to partner together and are interested in creating more fulfilling life experiences and relationships.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
