I specialize in psychodynamic therapy which emphasizes how the totality of our life experience affects our view of the world.
Life inevitably challenges our ability to stay balanced and centered throughout our day to day existence. Working with a psychologist can offer the breathing room needed to help make sense of our circumstances. The process of therapy and the journey of self-discovery in a supportive environment can help untangle confusing thoughts, feelings, and behavioral patterns that seem to be keeping you stuck. Whether you have feelings of depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, or a challenging life transition, I will collaborate with you to help you find clarity.

Everyone experiences loneliness, frustration, anger and discouragement at times - these are normal human emotions. However, when you feel these negative emotions more than occasionally you can spiral downward and your life can feel like it’s “out of control”. You may have been able to work through difficult situations in the past but, everyone needs help at some point. You are already taking the first step by considering therapy which takes some courage in itself. Arranging a free, confidential phone call to discuss your issue is the next step.

I specialize in psychotherapy for infertility and pregnancy loss, helping individuals and couples to process and grow from the trauma and loss often associated with these experiences. At the same time, many women struggling with infertility and pregnancy loss experience intense feeling of shame and inadequacy. My approach to treatment is to use empathy, normalization, and validation to help women restore healthy self-esteem and reduce feelings of shame. In general, fertility issues and/or miscarriages can leave one feeling depressed, anxious, and stressed, yet isolated and misunderstood, and in need of support and understanding.

I am a psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral oriented therapist who incorporates mindfulness, strength based, and person-centered approaches.
I specialize in treating adults struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress/burnout, and chronic illness. Many present as independent, resilient, and appear “put together” to others. Internally, they feel unfulfilled, overwhelmed, and struggle to manage their emotional well-being. They can often recall impactful life events but are unsure how to recognize and/or process emotions surrounding them. These individuals recognize that their usual way of “pushing through” isn’t enough and are ready to explore healthier, more sustainable ways of moving forward.

I use my psychodynamic training with evidenced based techniques along with honest dialogue, encouragement and humor.
Is there something holding you back from the experience of feeling fully alive, safe, and satisfied in your own life; in your own skin? Experiencing internal and external difficulties long enough and under enough stress, we become disconnected to what makes life worth living. I believe my job is to provide a safe space and be a supportive, caring, non-judgmental presence as a guide and collaborator. Together we can face what is hurting or not helping you. I have worked over the years in a variety of settings with adults, children, teens, families and couples from diverse backgrounds and identities.

I completed a two year post-doctoral training program in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Washington School of Psychiatry, and have trained at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Entering psychotherapy may be one of the hardest and best things you will ever do. It is an act of courage and hope, and contains the implicit belief that you have the power to change your life. It requires a trusting, connected relationship with someone who will understand and not judge. We will figure out together what is blocking you from reaching your potential, and help you get closer to living the vital, rich, fulfilling life you were meant to lead.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
