Searching for a therapist who gets the experiences of transgender, kinky, polyamorous, queer communities? I believe that we heal the world by healing each other and heal each other by healing the world. You can get through this, whatever it may be. You can even grow through it. I can support you in times of crisis, growth, and giving so that you can show up fully for yourself and your relationships. Whether you're struggling or disappointed in your sexual or romantic relationships, you're dealing with trauma, or transition, I'll be on your team. Therapy is a tool you can use to build on the strength and resilience you already have.

Want to support your transgender or nonbinary child? Looking for a therapist with some shared lived experiences but also plain old therapist experience? People who work with me say things like "I'm worried about a relationship", "Life totally sucks right now and I don't know what to do", "How do I navigate parenthood on top of everything else"?, "It's hard to find my community and I'm lonely", "I've becoming a 'professional gay' which comes with its own challenges" . "I am leaving or have left an abusive relationship". If you're ready for some deep exploration that honors your values, culture, and spiritual practices, let's do it!

I also work with gay, lesbian and transgender couples and individuals.
I work as a team with my clients to help them recognize their potential and realistically help them make changes in their life. I start where the client is but look at their family history to get an idea of their foundation. My clients often are depressed and/or anxious so I come up with a treatment plan that meets their abilities. I treat teenagers and adults, individuals, couples and families. I have a background in domestic violence and often help victims in emotional and physical abuse cases. I also help people learn anger management techniques to control their tempers.

Finding a therapist is tough. The most important part is finding a good match. And you've already taken the first step. I believe in the healing power of authenticity and self advocacy. People struggle when they lose their sense of power, numb themselves from their problems, and feel trapped in their circumstances. Deep down, we all have a sense of what we need. But sometimes life makes us forget, ignore, or deprioritize those needs.. In particular, I focus on grief, LGBT issues, and the challenges faced by young adults. As someone who has experienced grief, identifies as trans, and has survived early adulthood, I can relate.

As a queer and trans identified therapist, I personally understand how painful it can be to go to someone for support and be met with microaggressions, rejection, or outright hostility because of your marginalized identity. Therapy can be a transformative tool of self-discovery and a place to collaboratively develop a roadmap to a life filled with deep meaning and joy. But if your therapist does not understand or accept crucial parts of who you are, it can be deeply damaging and disheartening. If you have had experiences like these, I may be a good fit to provide you with the culturally competent therapy you deserve.

My mental and behavioral health approach is liberation-focused, person-in-environment, and gender-affirming. I approach this from a harm reductionist and crisis de-escalation perspective.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
