I work mostly from an ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) framework, but also incorporate elements of CBT, DBT, and interpersonal therapy.
Welcome! I'm Joanna. I work with adolescents (16+) & adults, most frequently young adults. I particularly enjoy working with transitional issues - changes in school, jobs, family, relationships, identity, etc. Often, my clients are dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, and/or interpersonal conflict. I value working with folks with a range of backgrounds, races, faiths, genders, sexualities, and lifestyles. My work sees people through a systems lens, recognizes the oppressive barriers to mental wellness, and encourages reflection on cultural impact. My ideal client is open minded, patient, and motivated for change.

I will bring in components of polyvagal theory and DBT to help you learn skills to regulate your nervous system and bring awareness to your triggers.
My ideal client would be someone who recognizes unhealthy patterns and is ready to make a change, whether this is a disruption in day-to-day functioning, relationships, self-esteem, or addiction. Even if your goal isn't clear at the moment, I will help guide you along the way until you're able to see the finish line you envision. Clients should be ready to be challenged and encouraged to get outside of their comfort zone.

I believe that anyone who wants to make a change in their life can do it. My style is laid back, with an emphasis on listening and getting to know the client on their own terms, and assisting them with self expression when needed. My orientation is self psychological and relational. For some issues, I find that a more structured, directed approach is helpful. I have recently incorporated DBT skills groups into my practice.

My ideal clients are women navigating life transitions amidst uncertainties and pressures, filled with excitement yet also significant anxiety. They seek a supportive environment to express themselves, gain clarity, manage stress, find emotional stability, and build self-confidence. Their goals are to achieve a healthy work-life balance, feel empowered, and navigate transitions to find fulfillment and happiness.

I utilize a combination of third-generation Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral ( DBT), and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
There can be times when it seems our bodies, or minds, or even or world are betraying us. The human experience itself can be difficult. Introduce chronic fear, depression, intrusive thoughts, or anxiety and it can be difficult to see ways to change, making things even more overwhelming. We will work together to see how you can find your footing and create a more beneficial perspective and hopefully impact your future. I am most versed in treatment of depression, anxiety, OCD/related, trauma, substance use (alcohol, marijuana, other behavioral i.e., food, sex, etc.), couples, and men’s issues; LGBTQ+ ally. Regards, Alex Amico LCSW

I have been trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and always utilize trauma informed care.
Each and every person is incredibly unique, so I work hard to collaborate with adults (18+) to create individualized treatment to learn how to modify thoughts and behaviors, increase skill to improve self awareness, self concept, relationship effectiveness, and to decrease impulsive and non effective decision making. I strongly promote non-judgmental mindfulness to achieve meaningful and effective change. This is emphasized to increase growth, recovery, and balance in accordance with your short and long term goals.

I utilize a variety of modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an integration of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy ( DBT) skills, Narrative therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, while incorporating a holistic view point of our body and mind.
My goal as a therapist is to help you reach a deeper understanding of your struggles and to help create awareness in your life. My belief is once these strengths are recognized and practiced, we can begin working towards our greater potential and begin the healing process or better management of our daily life. I believe people are resilient and have the capacity to heal, if we choose to. I teach practical skills and provide tools that you, you and your partner, child(ren), and family can use every day.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
