Chronic Pain Therapists in Ellicott City, MD
Hello! I'm a health and performance psychologist. I'm warm, experienced, genuine, and dedicated to helping people reach their full potential at work, in sport/the arts, and in life. That often involves helping people find ways to thrive in the face of health and pain concerns. I hold graduate degrees in Kinesiology, Counseling Psychology (Maryland) and postdoctoral training in chronic pain research from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. I've walked the walk as a former NCAA athlete (golf) and someone who has personally dealt with health concerns.

I am grounded in CBT, but also believe in the power of art and movement in the healing of emotional pain.
Welcome to Gaining Clarity Counseling Services! All are welcome here! I take pride in being real. While techniques and interventions are important, the relationship between therapist and client is essential for positive outcomes. I have particular interest and experience in working with those impacted by traumatic experiences. I have come to recognize that much of client distress stems from unresolved trauma (grief, abuse, mistreatment, etc.). Together, we will address root causes and equip you with the tools necessary for sustainable lifestyle change. Please note services are 100% virtual at this time.

To be human is to feel great joy, as well as have times of pain. Sometimes along the way, we may need support to address and re-balance the difficult and joyful aspects of our daily life. I believe that each of us has the intrinsic capacity to recognize how to grow in a healthy way. My approach to treatment is grounded in the belief that each person possesses innate, inner resources that they can use to heal, grow, and thrive.

Seeking out therapeutic services is healthy for our mind/body/soul connection. Just as we go to the gym to keep our bodies healthy, or puzzles to keep our mind sharp, we go to therapy to keep our connection between our mind/body/soul. Further, relationships are the center of connection: how we relate to others (family, friends, coworkers,) and the relationship we have with ourselves. It is my privilege to sit with you (or your family members) while we navigate the roadblocks and successes that make your life experience uniquely yours. It is my hope that in through this exploration and work, we can improve your relationships.

I am an integrative psychotherapist who grounds my practice in trauma-informed, narrative, and critical consciousness frameworks. I have experience and training in mindfulness, trauma-focused CBT, child and adolescent trauma, IFS, and EMDR therapy. I have also completed population-specific trainings relating to gender, sexuality, racism and oppression. I seek to challenge dominant narratives which negatively impact the ways people come to see themselves, understanding that many mental health challenges are deeply tied to the social, environmental, and political contexts in which they occur.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
