It's so nice to meet you! Navigating your teenage and young adult years can be so full of unknowns, and sometimes, it seems like there is no clear path forward-especially when things like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and life-stressors get in the way. Maybe you're trying to figure out what to do after high school, or maybe you're paralyzed by fear of failure. Maybe you find yourself struggling with relationships in your life or you're at the crossroads of major life decisions. Whatever you're struggling with, counseling can be a life-changing tool to propel yourself to where and who you want to be.

Do you struggle with intense emotions including anger, sadness, or shame? Feelings of chronic emptiness, numbness, or existential dread? Do you struggle with impulses or destructive behavior? Feeling out of sync with others or the world? Trauma from childhood attachment wounds, abuse and neglect, chronic invalidation, and loss can manifest in difficult to understand intense emotional states, numbness, or destructive behaviors. I can see your strength, even when you cannot. I use my education and experience in psychology to lead you to discover your most authentic self. I believe that we all develop patterns of behaviors due to our life circumstances that can be both positive and negative. By examining these patterns in behavior and thought and how they serve us, one can make changes to improve life. I am an action-oriented therapist who believes therapy should not end as soon as you leave the office. I will often give techniques to practice or topics for further reflection.

I’ve always been fascinated by the butterfly effect because I find it relatable to therapy. The theory says small things can lead to large-scale changes in the future state. The concept is imagined with a butterfly flapping its wings and causing a typhoon. In therapy, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and making changes in life can seem daunting. My goal is to provide you with insight and teach you strategies that may have that effect on you. It can be hard to see the change you are making in the moment but when you look back, you realize all of those little things actually made a significant impact; thus the butterfly effect.

"Fear lives in the head. And courage lives in the heart. The job is to get from one to the other" - Louis Penny. It is inevitable that we will be wounded during the journey of life. Many of those wounds generally heal on their own. However some wounds cut deeper. They are unable to heal themselves and leave scars causing broken relationships, anxiety, addiction, insecurity, fear, and pain. Facing these wounds can be frightening and overwhelming, especially when facing them alone. Together we find the courage and strength to face and heal these wounds.

It’s not always easy to find someone who understands and listens to you. The first step in therapy is finding someone you can trust with your scariest thoughts and emotions. With support and empathy, we can help you learn new ways to manage your symptoms, relationships or situations that work for you.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
