Relationships can sometimes hit a rough patch as life has a habit of "getting in the way", adding stressors that even the strongest relationships find hard to navigate without professional support from time to time. Sometimes it can be challenging for a couple to be kind or thoughtful of each others needs or find the time to talk about current problems without escalating the issues. It is not uncommon for couples to experience problems listening to each other or enjoying each others company. I have helped hundreds of couples find their way back to the loving relationship they want and need!

I enjoy working with people. I work well with all age groups: adults, young adults, the elderly, children, adolescents and families. I am trained to adapt myself to a person's individual needs, developmental level, and pace. I consider myself an eclectic clinician, predominantly practicing Rogerian (person-centered approach incorporating humor and accurate empathy). I collaborate well with other treating professionals to provide the suitable support for a person under my care. If you are looking for a dedicated professional who will meet your or your child's needs by applying evidence-based treatment approaches, look no further!

I believe in helping people to become happy, healthy, and whole. There is something spiritual in nature about the counseling process that I like to lean into to help others become the best versions of themselves. I enjoy the process of helping individuals to heal, cope, transform and thrive. I consider it to be a privilege to be a part of that journey. I am good at fostering a positive therapeutic alliance that is vital to building a solid foundation in which to grow from. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to work through their issues.

I love what I do as a psychologist and have enjoyed working with many different people. While my profile reflects some populations and treatments I've had more experience with, I won't narrow down my list of preferred clients because I don't have such preferences. Whom ever walks into my office always has something that I can connect to & see an opportunity for change. In addition, I know that the person who presents for therapy with a certain set of concerns may reveal to be a different person with different sets of concerns as sessions progress. The bigger variable is whether I'm the right fit for you. Hopefully I will be.

Healing and making the most out of each day is what this journey is all about.  For many people, this is done best with the help and support of others. My passion is to be present with those who are feeling like they could benefit from talking with  someone who is compassionate, consistent, and knowledgeable.

People just want to be happy. So I help my clients learn how to be healthy as individuals and how to have healthy relationships, too. It's been so rewarding for me to work with individuals and couples for the past 25 years. We explore how to be healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This wellness checklist can be applied to individual growth and healing, and to couples in marriage counseling, pre-marital, or relationship counseling as well. During this process, counseling addresses the symptoms, while therapy addresses the causes.

Henri Nouwen says, "real care means the willingness to help each other in making our brokenness into the gateway to joy." Perhaps it is the broken pieces of your life that have brought you to this page - broken relationships, broken dreams or just feeling broken. In this you are not alone, but it is my firm conviction that the broken pieces that are strewn about you can become the very material needed in creating wholeness and peace.

I’m not good enough. I don’t trust others. It's hopeless. All of these are negative beliefs that a person may have for themselves. These negative beliefs affect us everyday and are the underlying cause of our unhappiness, stress, anxiety, depression, low moods and/or negative thoughts. If you identify with any of these beliefs or have other negative beliefs, I can help you.

July 2024 update: I am accepting new clients: adults, in Maryland, via telehealth only. I specialize in working with adults who have ADHD; who experience excess anxiety, worry, or distress; and Men's Issues. I help people who feel like their lives are overwhelming or out of control and they are ready to do something to produce change. Together, through active collaboration, we can identify the specific things you would like to change in your life and create achievable goals based on what you can realistically control. This includes practicing new skills to handle stress in your life. I maintain a secular perspective.

In addition to be being distractable and impulsive, children with ADHD frequently posses many unique strengths: including creativity, resilience, and the ability to "hyper-focus." To begin harnessing the giftedness associated with ADHD, we develop customized treatments that focus on maximizing your child's unique learning style, interests and other natural talents. Our goal is to partner with you to put in place systems that develop skills & strategies, and make behavioral changes that improve your child's performance at school and at home -- so that your child is empowered to thrive and not just survive ADHD.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
