I have specialized in working with eating disorders and women's issues throughout my career.
I am so excited that you are here, looking for help. That is the most important step you can take to get the help you need. The next best step you can take is therapist shopping. You are unlikely to be best friends with every person you meet and not every therapist will be the best match for you, so shop around and do your homework! Ask lots of questions and read everything you can find until you are satisfied and comfortable. I am here to answer those questions and help you take the next step. Then it will be one step at a time towards meeting your goals.

I have special training in trauma disorders, eating disorders, and stress related disorders although I will work with many other problems.
With more than 20 years of psychotherapy, testing and consulting experience, I have a broad range of skills and personalize treatment to people's needs. My style is collaborative, and my therapy orientation is integrative; (i.e., I use several therapeutic theories and techniques). My clients often appreciate my genuine caring and kind but firm manner, and they tend not to terminate therapy prematurely.

I am a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist ( CEDS), and served as the director of the University of MD Eating Disorders Program and co-coordinator of MD State Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
Our lives are complicated and often stressful, necessitating juggling multiple roles, responsibilities and internal as well as external conflicts. Clients may be dealing with so many challenges, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders ( anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating), relationship problems, career uncertainty, family conflicts. Whatever the issue, the important factor is the willingness to face it and bring energy to working on it. The work we do in psychotherapy is both nurturing and stretching and opens the door to the possibility of growth and change .

I have worked with a broad range of issues, with extensive background in eating disorders, issues of adolescence and young adulthood, life transitions, depression, anxiety problems, low self-esteem, and Asperger's Disorder (including relationship issues).
I emphasize a collaborative approach to therapy--I bring 30 years of clinical experience, as well as enthusiasm, hope, and a dose of humor, and ask only that you bring an openness to change. Together, we identify specific life goals and generate plans to achieve them. Ultimately, you will come to understand that you make perfect sense; you may just not have been able to use this self-awareness to make the most productive decisions. My strong suit is quickly identifying underlying problems and patterns, as well as your personal strengths and resources.

I have been treating eating disorders for 25 years and have created a specific model of care to help others move out of shame and self-judgment to a place of freedom and peace.
Living with a binge eating disorder and feeling constantly at battle with food and with your body is brutal and painful. So many messages that constantly send a message that who you are and how you look are not ok. It's time to heal..heal from the pain of the diet culture and heal from the pain of constantly blaming yourself! The dynamics that are at work in eating disorders are complex and each person has their own story of both how it began, how it has been and how they want it to be moving forward. There is a path to healing and freedom!

I have also presented and published numerous papers on depression, eating disorders and women's issues.
Choosing the right therapist is at least as important as the decision to enter treatment. Self-disclosure and, ultimately change can only occur in an environment in which the patient feels respected, safe, and secure in both the therapist's sincerity and expertise. I bring the maturity, skill and compassion derived from 20+ years of providing therapy for depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, and relationship issues. I am committed to helping my patients recognize and change painful patterns that keep them from fully engaging in healthy relationships, or leave them mired in self-defeating thoughts and behaviors.

My key areas of interest include: eating disorders and nutrition related issues, depression and mood disorders, adjustment to health diagnoses, body image, high achievement anxiety, and social issues related to race and discrimination.
I entered the mental health field, striving to de-stigmatize the idea of asking for help, providing support, and to start necessary conversations. I work with clients who would like to build their own strength, identify coping strategies and heal from issues that have not been dealt with yet. I have a passion for helping women of color improve their mental health and overall wellbeing through therapy.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
