My ideal client would be someone who recognizes unhealthy patterns and is ready to make a change, whether this is a disruption in day-to-day functioning, relationships, self-esteem, or addiction. Even if your goal isn't clear at the moment, I will help guide you along the way until you're able to see the finish line you envision. Clients should be ready to be challenged and encouraged to get outside of their comfort zone.

My ideal client may need help with confidence, relationships, or learning who they are. They aim to reduce symptoms of clinical diagnoses and work with me to see progress in their lives. This client would want to learn more about themselves and improve their relationships with others and with themselves. They would be a motivated and insightful client who attends sessions regularly and comes prepared with topics to discuss. I would help this client by listening to them and their thoughts, offering support, and building a rapport with them.

I'm a queer neurodivergent therapist deeply committed to helping you navigate struggles with body image, disordered eating, obsessional doubt, anxiety, and executive functioning. My practice is rooted in a liberatory and equity framework that recognizes the impact of systemic oppression on mental health. I embrace an anti-carceral approach to care where you actively shape your treatment under my guidance. As a relational therapist, I strive to show up authentically to help you challenge societal expectations and norms that are limiting you. If you've ever been told you're "too much" or "not enough," we might be a good fit.

As a child of immigrants, I have had my fair share of feeling stuck, confused, or vulnerable especially in environments that didn’t quite reflect my experiences. As an art therapist and counselor, I focus on creating safer, trauma-informed spaces for individuals to explore themselves more authentically and to bring awareness of how they can be more empowered in their relationships and larger communities.

Opening up around the vulnerable and intimate details of our lives can be very uncomfortable. There is so much pressure to be “happy”, “better”, or “perfect”, while receiving messaging that being anything else is unacceptable. We are very adaptive yet often struggle to effectively get our needs met, so may engage in avoidance behaviors and withhold or internalize our feelings to try to prevent things from getting worse. You want to feel more like your true self and get more satisfaction out of your relationships. You need an unconditionally supportive, non-judgmental, creative, and humorous therapist who accepts you however you are.

You’re trying to hold it together as best as you can. You are able to be there for everyone else but struggle to show up for yourself. Sometimes you just feel so down but you can’t quite figure out why. It's been going on for a while now and no matter what you have tried, nothing seems to make you feel better. It may be something from your past that you are having a hard time dealing with or may even avoid thinking about. You feel like no one gets it. So you put on a brave face each day and decide you can deal with whatever it is later. You question your every move and your relationships, thinking “something must be wrong with me"

Hi, I'm Laricka. My passion for studying mental health came from being in an area where mental health issues were very prevalent. Instead of people being properly diagnosed, and helped, they were dismissed, and it left people with unhealed trauma, feelings, and emotions. I sought out to learn about mental health so I can help promote change in the next person’s life.

Hello! I am Sabrina, DC born and raised, and from a large immigrant Peruvian household. I believe therapy is a helpful space to deepen one’s understanding of themselves and others. It is also a space for growth and healing from our past experiences that have shaped us and our worldview. I use a systemic lens that involves viewing the individual within the context of a larger system. This includes people, environments, rules, and societal norms that impact us.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
