I have worked in medical settings and I am very comfortable collaborating with your primary care doctor to help you reach health goals that are impacted by stress or substance use.
It takes courage to ask for help and with that in mind I maintain an atmosphere that is free from judgment. Whether motivation for therapy is internal, or someone in your life is asking you to seek help, I will work with you to find a strategy for making healthier decisions. I work with individuals (adults), couples, and families experiencing challenges like anxiety or depression for many years as well as individuals who have only recently experienced stressful circumstances related to health, work, home, school, or relationships. I am an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and offer a supportive environment for identity exploration.

My professional journey has been deeply enriched by diverse experiences that have shaped my approach to therapy. With a background in providing individual and group therapy to children within school settings, I've cultivated a profound understanding of the unique challenges they face and the importance of fostering a supportive environment for growth. My work supporting individuals with substance use disorders across different levels of care has instilled in me a commitment to harm reduction and compassionate care. At the heart of my therapeutic practice lies a dedication to serving communities with understanding and empathy.

My diverse experiences in the field of counseling have prepared me to assist you and/or your child with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, parenting concerns, ADHD,and substance use.
Are you or your child struggling with overwhelming feelings, thoughts, or behaviors? Are you looking for someone to support you and assist you in making changes? I believe therapy is most effective when a trusting relationship exists between a counselor and client. This is my approach as I work with children, adolescents, and adults. Together, we can collaborate to make some of those overwhelming experiences feel more manageable.

In 1987, I started the Life Mastery Center to help people in their journey to find happiness and fulfillment in life. Life is undoubtedly stressful and can bring about feelings of depression and anxiety. These feelings can affect relationships at home, at work, at school. I believe that through the positive therapeutic process, one can get unstuck from negative habits, negative barriers, negative mindsets. The positive therapeutic process helps to identify the problems and build positive life skills that will lead to a happier, healthier, fulfilling life.

Reaching out for help can seem intimidating, but it is the first step in doing something for you. Strength doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming life’s challenges you once thought you couldn’t. Living with an eating disorder, anxiety or depression can feel overwhelming but you don’t have to tackle it alone. Therapy encourages open communication in order to bring awareness to your innermost thoughts and feelings.

Couples Therapy: My practice is welcoming of all couples. The client in couples counseling is the relationship, rather than the conflicts that each person has, which is a more effective way of healing the relationship. The couples therapy I do has three themes: past, present and future.

As we journey through life, we encounter obstacles and challenges through the interactions we have with our family, our friends, and our environment that shape our reactions to the world around us and impact our self-perception. We may be unaware of how these behaviors negatively impact our day to day interactions and functioning that may be hindering our potential, leading to existential crises and feelings of aimlessness and hopelessness.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
