I believe therapy is a collaborative effort for healing, and I seek to build an authentic relationship with my clients. I’m dedicated to empowering people to learn how to live by their values instead of feeling like their emotions and thoughts control or overwhelm their lives. In the midst of all the pain, there’s a way to feel grounded and connected. The work we do together will likely be challenging and it’s also an opportunity to create real, lasting change. If you're suffering from self harm, including cutting, bingeing, restriction, purging, or have OCD, my targeted approach is highly effective when you engage in the process.

Life is challenging and ever-changing. You may find you need someone to help you navigate through these life transitions. Parenting can be a challenge, especially if you have a child diagnosed with autism, developmental delays or intellectual delays. As adults, you are trying to manage it all. It can be harder when you are struggling with depression and/or anxiety, bipolar disorder or addictions. It is time for you to take care of yourself. We will build on your strengths and help you to find ways to meet your needs.

In working with families and individuals, I use both traditional psychotherapies such as positive psychology, psychodynamic techniques, and cognitive and behavioral therapies. In addition, I am trained in mind/body techniques such as EMDR and hypnosis. I also believe in the healing connections we make with nature and will often use pet therapy in assisting my clients to reach their goals.

Are you struggling to cope with the effects of trauma or other stressful life events? Are feelings of anxiety and depression preventing you from living a full and meaningful life? People often search for strategies to find relief from their symptoms, but discover that these techniques are of limited use or create their own problems. I specialize in evidence-based psychotherapy for adults with these conditions - that is, therapy that has been extensively studied through years of psychological research.

What keeps me growing as a professional and drives me to do what I do, are the individuals and families that I have the privilege to work with everyday. There are times in all of our lives when we need to reach out for support and encouragement and to know that we are not alone. I have extensive experience in the field of trauma, in particular with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, child abuse, and child neglect. When working with this population, I have treated issues ranging from but not limited to PTSD, depression, anxiety, attachment, and anger.

With more than 20 years of psychotherapy, testing and consulting experience, I have a broad range of skills and personalize treatment to people's needs. My style is collaborative, and my therapy orientation is integrative; (i.e., I use several therapeutic theories and techniques). My clients often appreciate my genuine caring and kind but firm manner, and they tend not to terminate therapy prematurely.

The contemporary definition of empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another. This is the philosophical mantra of my sensitivity to other people's feelings, emotions, and desires. My genuine, empathetic relationship with clients and mutual trust are essential to successful therapy. I pride myself on being a compassionate listener to individuals who have faced life’s most profound challenges, suffered from mood disorders, experienced trauma, grief, abuse, or relational problems, and suffered multiple stresses, including those related to work and academia.

You have probably tried therapy before, but you're still hurting. You still feel stuck. I work differently than traditional therapists - using Evidence Based Psychotherapies - treatments proven to work by research. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are based in brain science. We can retrain your brain. We can work to build new coping skills and a different approach to emotional pain. Research shows these therapies work to help people like you feel more calm and connected to their lives. You can feel better. You can live better!

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
