Are you lying in bed at night with racing thoughts? Do you have trouble letting go of stress from your day? Are you having trouble falling asleep or do you wake up multiple times overnight? Are you replaying old memories from the past? Or maybe you have had chronic pain for years and you can't find relief. If you are struggling with insomnia, anxiety, trauma, or chronic pain, I am glad you're here. Dealing with these problems can be challenging but you can heal if you have the right tools. I use clinically proven techniques like EMDR, CBT for insomnia, Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), and other brain-based strategies.

Are you dealing with a chronic health condition such as back pain, headaches/migraine, fibromyalgia, tendonitis, IBS, or other medically unexplained symptoms? If so, please know there is cause for hope. Neuroscience now reveals that many chronic pain conditions are linked to changes in the brain rather than disease in the body. This type of brain based pain, which can be referred to as neuroplastic or psychophysiologic, is benign and treatable. Through therapy, you can learn psychological and emotional techniques to regain your health.

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist who works with high-achieving high schoolers, college students and recent grads. For over 20 years, I’ve directed guidance and learning programs, taught and coached at boarding and day schools in the U.S. and abroad, including The American School in Switzerland and the Landon School. I’ve come to recognize therapy as being as integral to health as diet and exercise, and as something that can benefit anyone whether they have a diagnosis or not. As the adage goes, “You don’t need to be sick in order to get better.” I work with clients who want to define goals, harness strengths and honor potential.

Have you ever considered the importance of building a relationship with yourself? While we often prioritize our connections with others and allow their feedback to influence us, it's essential to recognize the significant role our minds play in this dynamic. Our mind functions as a central hub, shaped by our experiences and acting as a self-organizing system. The brain processes sensory information, allowing for self-expression and personal insight. Understanding this inner system is crucial for fostering a healthy relationship with oneself.

Have you been feeling off? Like something is missing? Wanting more for yourself? You wouldn't be here if you weren't ready for change, and I'd be honored to walk with you as you start the process! It can feel scary & overwhelming, yet therapy is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. It takes courage to reach out and ask for help. Doing so does not make you weak, but shows your strength.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
