Life may be harder than you expected. You may feel stressed, depressed, or anxious. You may be struggling with a decision. Relationships with your family are complex. You may want to improve communication with your partner. Parenting is tough. You may have suffered a loss, & you don't know why it still affects you. You may have put a dream on hold while you attended to family matters, & now you wonder if you are still capable of fulfilling that dream. You may feel you have been given gifts, but you aren't using them to their full potential.

Do you know what it's like to have a narcissistic partner or did you grow up in a family with a narcissistic parent? Were you a scapegoat in your family dynamics and know what it's like to lose your voice? Are you a first or second generation immigrant with baggage that feels too daunting to unpack? Are you struggling to process grief? Do you long to find your voice again?

I utilize a personalized blend of clinical tools and therapeutic models to foster sustained progress, ultimately equipping you and your family with the necessary skills to effectively navigate and manage these intense emotions.
I am profoundly passionate about working with children (4-12) who have Big Feelings and Big Reactions. These children are wired to feel deeply and react strongly. As a deeply feeling child myself (and now a deeply feeling adult), I possess a unique ability to decipher childrens' emotional experiences and the motivating factors behind their choices. This is the driving force behind my practice.

Research shows that teachers, doctors, nurses, counselors, social workers, pastors, and CEOs face unique challenges that can leave them drained of the energy they need to be effective on the job and in personal and family relationships.
I have been working with individuals, couples, and families in the Maryland area for 20 years, During my time here I have had the privileged to serve as a college chaplain, youth pastor, university professor, and mental health clinic director. At present I divide my time between serving mental health and substance abuse clinics as a clinical supervisor and consultant and running a thriving private practice. I specialize in helping other professionals fight off burnout and establish an effective work/life balance. This become increasingly important with the additional stress Covid-19 has placed on all of us.

Recently voted "Reader's Pick, Best Family Therapist" 2014 in Bethesda Magazine, I believe the therapeutic relationship (between client and psychotherapist) is the most important element in the interpersonal and relational interventions of therapy. My goal is to meet you where you are, and to help you get to where you want to be: as an individual, a couple, and/or as a family.

As a therapist, I work with children, adults, couples, and families as they navigate various life transitions. This can include reorganization within the family system, through either a new marriage, a separation or divorce, birth of a new family member, the exploration of alternative family building options, or various other life events. Our lives are constantly in flux, and we all sometimes need support to navigate these decision points and learn to better manage the anxiety they create.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
