A cognitive approach as well experiential modalities (art, music, role play) is used to develop coping skills and to set therapeutic goals.
Reaching out for help when our lives become unmanageable or challenging can seem overwhelming and even insurmountable at times. Whether trauma, anxiety, or relational - healing is not linear, there is an ebb and flow we must experience to find our true selves. Sitting in transitional moments of emotion as we process memories and experiences is often considered the most important part of the therapeutic journey. It is in these moments we find clarity, knowledge, deep meaning, love, and strength. These moments become the catalyst for change.

During my 15+ years of being an art therapist, I have helped individuals of all ages and backgrounds heal and grow.
The decision to start therapy is an important step toward change and personal growth. It may not be an easy step but you won’t be alone. I want to help you through whatever lies ahead on your path. I will support and encourage you to express yourself in the most meaningful, genuine way possible. That may take the form of talking, art making or other creative, mindful engagement. I will provide empathic, nonjudgmental listening and create a safe space for you.

This is accomplished by drawing from the theoretical frameworks of cognitive behavioral therapy, art therapy, solution focused therapy, play therapy, and psychodynamic theory.
I have been practicing as a licensed social worker with children, adolescents and families since 2008. I received my Bachelors of Social Work and Fine Art in 2007 from McDaniel College. I then practiced as a bachelor level social worker for four years with foster children and families in Baltimore City. After completing an internship providing therapy to children and families who experienced trauma, I completed an Advanced Standing Graduate Program. In 2012, I graduated from University of Maryland School of Social Work with a clinical concentration and a specialization in children and families.

To do this, I mainly use a client-centered approach and aspects of Psychodynamic Art Therapy, Jungian Art Therapy, Trauma-Informed Therapy, Positive Psychology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Theory, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Art therapy is not just about being able to express yourself but also being able to process and explore what is made. My role as an art therapist is to help with the processing and exploration through meeting you where you are, actively listening to what you bring into the space, and providing you with the art materials and directives that best suit your needs and where you are at. As an art therapist, it is important for me to provide a safe space, active listening, empathy, cultural humility, and open-mindedness to clients, as well as being trauma-informed.

Are you feeling invisible? Angry about a breakup? Have you recently experienced a loss/death? Do you feel misunderstood? Are you experiencing more pain, burnout, and/or fatigue than normal? Does your adolescent need extra support? Is your family/relationship falling apart? If your answer to any of these questions is "Yes," or even if you have questions of your own, it may be time to reach out and talk through those thoughts and feelings. I would be delighted to be the person you reach out to.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
