As a licensed psychologist, I specialize in the treatment of individuals with OCD, anxiety disorders, and substance use difficulties, as well as families of individuals who struggle in these ways.
You might be someone who is plagued by doubts. You fear that something awful will happen and feel the need to protect yourself or others from the threat. Your family and friends might try to reassure you, but you just keep imagining worst case scenarios. Perhaps you find yourself engaging in unhelpful behaviors that get in the way of the things that are important to you. Nobody can understand why you keep making these choices, despite their negative consequences. I hope to navigate these challenges with you in a safe and affirming space, where you feel accepted and understood.

I have extensive experience in treating substance use issues using a harm reduction/decision making approach.
At the core of my practice is a humanistic value that honors the individual person and the whole of their life experience within the larger global system. I focus on helping people build awareness of their needs and how to be able to effectively weigh decisions for action. I work with all genders in the age spectrum of adolescence to adulthood. To compliment the diversity of the experiences that define life, I use a variety of psychological modalities. My approach to therapy draws heavily from training in systems theory, existential therapy, relational therapy, ecotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

We specialize in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, poverty, effects of incarceration, anger management and substance use disorder.
Mental health encompasses emotional, psychological and social well-being. It is important at every stage of life, as it can make daily routines and tasks challenging. Often, individuals are unaware of how their experiences are connected to their mental health, or unable to focus on those connections. Untreated mental health can increase unhealthy coping skills, dysfunctional relationships, low self-esteem, and unreached goals. Many individuals want stability, understanding and happiness. Having a supportive, therapeutic relationship can cultivate both personal and mental health goals.

After spending 25 years employed as an editor and writer, I decided on a new career path in which I could help people recognize and recover from their all-too-often stigmatized substance use and/or mental health issues. Every time a client connects with an idea, concept, or insight about who, how, and where they are in life, I know I made the right choice.

I specialize in cognitive and behavioral approaches, training in substance use disorders, trauma, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and mindfulness.
I believe mental health care should be viewed just like physical health care, something we all need but in different ways at different times – sometimes an emergency needing acute care or maybe specific ailment, other times you just need a check-up and to check in.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
