As an Autistic and neurodivergent queer nonbinary clinician, I am uniquely qualified to work with others in the LGBTQIA community. Together we can unpack historical trauma as well as societal trauma. Clients will learn to safely connect back to our bodies and better manage chronic illnesses. We work together to rediscover joy, connect back to nature, and build healthy relationships. My practice centers decolonization and is poly and kink affirming as well as being HAES and fat positive. I enjoy helping clients build radical self acceptance and love for their bodies.

No childhood is perfect. Growing up can be an exciting and beautiful experience at times, but it is also hard work- and it can really be a lot to feel! How do we help our children grow to be as happy and confident as possible in this complicated world? How can we help them relate in a healthy way to the full range of emotions that come with a meaningful life? Parents have an important and challenging job to do. Every child is unique. Our children sometimes unknowingly stand on the bruises of our own childhood or adulthood in ways that can surprise and confuse us.

Being a teenager is tough. Navigating school and home, extracurriculars and relationships with ever developing brains and bodies, emotions and perspectives, relationships and identities, distractions and temptations, can lead to anxiety and fear, confusion and loneliness, disorientation, frustration, anger even hopelessness. Parents, teachers, coaches and friends aren’t always the people to help, and sometimes you get to a point when you know you can’t do it alone...

I have worked with individuals and families in a variety of treatment settings. My experience as a teacher, mentor, athletic coach, and Dean of Students has allowed me to distinguish the different developmental stages of children, particularly adolescent males. I have a dedicated interest in helping the youth to make constructive changes that allow them to reach goals that their confidence blocks them from obtaining. As a Practitioner working with families, I help clients make substantial changes that center around practical strategies and evidence-based practices that allow them to build strong, nourishing relationships.

I have consulted to a high-risk adolescent program and supervised other clinicians.
A young mother walked into my office crying and expressing her belief that asking for help indicated weakness. I thought to myself, it takes a strong person to ask for help. She had forgotten how strong and important she was. I believe the single most important ingredient in a successful therapy is establishing, nurturing, and maintaining a safe, trusting, and genuine relationship. While making use of psychodynamic and family systems approaches to treatment, I am also flexible in assisting patients in understanding patterns of behavior that may contribute to their conflicts and worries.

I am able to offer therapy to a child, adolescent, adult, family, and/or group.
I teach the art of connection. Over the past 35 years, as I have studied and treated trauma in various forms and within multiple systems, I have held steadfast to one of many mantras; relationships are the true antidote to trauma. The integrated approach that I utilize may prove effective for those seeking to heal, those seeking to grow and learn, and those seeking to enhance their self, their relationships, their parenting role, or their organization as a whole. I have been recognized as an expert in the field of crisis de-escalation as I have provided more than 10,000 hours of staff development to schools, hospital, and agencies.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
