If you are looking for pre-marital counseling, healing work after a betrayal, or hoping to learn how to communicate with your partner more effectively, I may be a great fit for you! Throughout my personal and professional life, I have witnessed first-hand the power healthy connection and relationships can have on an individual's healing process. With a majority of my training being with couples/family systems, I find joy in working with couples and families to heal attachment injuries and instill a sense of felt trust and connection. I do see individuals, specifically those seeking healing from complex trauma. I am EMDR trained!

For over 25 years, I've been helping individuals, couples, and families struggling with a range of problems including, but not limited to: anxiety, depression, ADD, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, marital and family distress, infidelity, and sexual addictions. Working as a therapist, researcher, and professor in medical settings throughout my career (University of Texas Medical Branch, University of Nebraska Medical Center) has informed my work with individuals and families to provide whole-personal care, integrating mind, body, and spirit.

It was my own dramatic ups and downs in a 22-year marriage and the adoption of two children with traumatic histories that fueled my desire to pursue counseling full time.
Want to create more fulfilling relationships? Need help with a crisis or mood swings? Stuck on how to overcome your past or a current obstacle? I believe therapy should be practical, personal and respectful toward the true bravery it takes for someone to seek help and aspire to change. I also apply creative exercises and experiential work to help build trust and solidify self- discovery for the children, teens and adults I work with. It is an honor and my passion to join individuals and families in their journey to cultivate a courageous heart, build life skills, and rediscover hope!

I work with individuals, couples, and families with attachment concerns and complex Trauma histories using EMDR, IFS, and Polyvagal Theory. I am sex-positive and welcoming to LGBTQIA+ clients. I feel confident working with individuals who, are or already have, deconstructed their faith/religion. When I meet with you, you can expect to have a conversation - one where you are heard, empathized with, and challenged. The therapeutic relationship is just that, a relationship. I will spend time getting to know you and helping you determine exactly what your goals are for this service before diving in.

My ideal client is a teen, adult or couple who is self aware, motivated, and is either curious or committed to doing the work necessary to start their healing journey. They may be someone who has learned a behavior to cope with trauma, like substance use or an eating disorder for example, and are discovering that tool is no longer serving them. Perhaps they notice the way they have been living is in alignment with someone else's values rather than their own. My goal as a therapist is to bring to their attention ideas and feedback that provides a new perspective that guides my clients to a more empowered way of life.

Dr. BE connects well with people who you might not traditionally associate with counseling services to guide them through their struggles and life challenges. That drive to "have it all" that so many professionals demonstrate can also make it hard to ask for help at times when it's needed most. With both a unique "no BS" attitude and a demeanor that's connectable, Dr. BE has become a valuable asset for clients who typically didn't expect to find therapy beneficial.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
