As a Licensed Therapist I believe there is great value in a curious and non-judgmental exploration of our feelings, thoughts, actions, and relational patterns in the presence of another person. I value the collaborative therapeutic relationship, using authenticity and humor within the therapy process. Together we will explore habits, beliefs, physical manifestations, limitations and the underlying issues that keep you stuck in patterns that restrict your capacity to enjoy the quality of life you desire. I welcome all genders, sexual orientations, races, nationalities, and have a strong commitment to trauma-informed care.

Unfortunately, I am not accepting new clients at this time. I work primarily with adults experiencing emotional challenges. This often looks like depression, anxiety, or grief. I also work with individuals going through a transition in life, relationships, career, or health status. During a difficult season in life we are more open to learning new skills and perspectives.

Outwardly it may seem that you have everything together. Yet inside, you're experiencing a persistent undercurrent of sadness, loneliness, or self-doubt. Despite how far you’ve come, you still don’t feel good enough. You don’t feel as close to others as you yearn to be. Your strong sense of what you “should be” feeling or doing makes it hard for you to connect with your actual emotions, desires, and needs, leaving you feeling stuck, numb, or confused. No matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to obtain the security or satisfaction you seek.

I view therapy as the process of developing a better understanding of thoughts, emotions and patterns. I utilize a person-centered therapy approach to create a warm, non-judgmental atmosphere where you can feel comfortable and safe. Through the journey of self-discovery, your needs and wants from the therapy process may change. This is why I pull from different evidence-based therapy approaches to best fit with your needs at the time. I have experience working with a variety of mental health concerns. However, no two people are the same. Together we will work towards your unique goals utilizing the individual strengths you bring.

"The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination." These are wise words from Carl Rogers, one of my biggest influences. My approach with clients comes from years of direct work with children, adolescents, families, and adults. Providing a safe and welcoming atmosphere is what I strive for as we create a therapeutic alliance and work through difficulties that you are facing. We will work together and address your concerns by focusing on your strengths and setting up goals that we will achieve with evidence-based practices.

I enjoy working with people who are struggling with trauma, anxiety, life transitions, and problems with self-esteem. I believe we each have the ability to understand and overcome our past traumas and current life stressors. I believe a supportive and safe space is necessary for people to overcome barriers and feel comfortable processing feelings, thoughts, and experiences.

So you've finally done it? You have finally reached the point where you're thinking about getting a therapist. I'm so proud of you! It takes a great deal of courage to ask for help when we need it. Why do you feel you need a therapist? Is daily life stress getting in the way of your happiness? Do you feel like "fine" is no longer good enough? Maybe you're too worried about what's coming next to fully enjoy things in the moment. Are you expecting more out of your relationships than you're getting?

I am a Pittsburgher and I'm proud to practice psychology in my home community. My goal is to see each client as a person first, and provide individualized healthcare. I see therapy as collaborative, and including both skill-building and self-exploration. In terms of self-exploration, I see the client as the expert in their own life, while a therapist is attuned to noticing themes or patterns that the client would have otherwise missed or avoided.

Mental health, addiction, and chronic illness all have something in common. They can be debilitating and create cyclical habits that are difficult to break. I work with motivated individuals who are willing to make a change in their lives for the better, examine their past and present experiences and feelings, and work to find healthier ways to cope.

Life's challenges can be difficult to navigate. We often decide to act in ways that do not support our goals and hold us back from becoming the best version of ourselves. I believe in the inherent ability for people to make positive changes in their lives. I have partnered with clients to support them in realizing their potential. I provide encouragement and empowerment to develop a deeper understanding of themselves. I provide my clients with a safe space to express their full emotions and develop skills to achieve their goals.

Pain, uncertainty, feelings of being lost and a failure emerge as we seek to find our individual path in life. These feelings often indicate it is time to be found, not that you are "mentally ill." They can indicate the need to connect with your inner Self rather than to substitute unfulfilling forms of social adjustment. My approach focuses on you as a unique individual. It recognizes that you have a Self in the sense that there is a unique inner guidance available to you. I will work as a guide in your journey toward conflict resolution and wholeness.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Pittsburgh?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
