Malissa's ideal client is one who is curious, open, and committed to trying interventions and techniques both in and out of sessions. The client is encouraged to look inward at times, explore past and present events that have shaped ideologies, beliefs, and protective barriers, and be willing to collaborate with her. The client's issues might range from anxiety and depression to challenges with dichotomous thoughts, identity confusion, academic/career exploration and transitions, spirituality conflicts, interpersonal challenges, women's issues, and premarital/marital coaching (including separation and divorce).
Due to Malissa's experience with a diverse clientele in varied work locations, she firmly believes that no client is alike, regardless of shared diagnoses, symptoms, or environmental/situational factors. Therefore, the focus is solely on helping each client achieve personalized goals by encouraging commitment, practice, and ongoing maintenance.
Malissa believes in emptying her backpack and continually addressing her assumptions and biases when meeting with clients. Malissa's goal is to provide unconditional acceptance, warmth, and non-judgment in a safe space. Malissa prefers collaboration and does not consider herself an expert in the client's life; she is an added support system.
