Waitlist for new clients
I work primarily with adolescents, children, and young adults who have had very difficult experiences and need a safe, playful, and steady partner to explore the impact of these events on their lives. As an out queer clinician I also work regularly with LGBTQIA+ clients who seek a therapist aware of the complexity of those identities in the world, as well as with parents looking to better develop skills to support trans or queer-identified children. I recognize racism and white supremacy as forms of social oppression that provoke traumatic responses and work accordingly with clients who have been harmed by these systems.

I usually work from a mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral perspective, in which we examine how your thinking affects your emotions and behaviors. By becoming aware of unhealthy thought patterns, we can learn to think differently; and similarly, change our relationship with the associated negative feelings. I usually work in a more direct manner, giving you concrete tools that you can use to help yourself. Of course, all of this will depend upon you! Each treatment will be a collaborative process, depending on what works best for you.

Living with anxiety sucks! Overthinking, trouble sleeping, worrying nonstop, feeling like your heart is beating out of your chest. There always seems to be something to worry about. You wish you had control of it, but it feels so unmanageable. It effects evert facet of your life at work, home, school and social life. You've tried everything and nothing has worked, and wonder if it will ever go away. All you want is peace and stability, able to live your life like it used to be before problematic anxiety. Finally in control of it!

Sometimes, children, adolescents, or adults might need guidance in determining the educational direction that works best for them. They might be facing challenges with education, attention, and/or social skills without knowing why, or they might have been previously assessed for these kinds of challenges and desire an update on their progress and current needs.

Relationship is at the heart of effective therapy. My central focus at the beginning is to create a safe, non-judgmental space with you so that our therapeutic relationship can grow. I am interested in knowing who you are, how you think, what your desires are, your relationships, what you identify as barriers to being all that you can be--all in order to understand who you are and how you function in the world. I want to work intimately with you to help you find health, wholeness, well-being, creativity, and freedom.

Perhaps you’re feeling like a broken record, yet you never feel understood by your partner. Maybe you’re walking on eggshells trying to avoid starting the next argument. Possibly, the pain of your spouse’s infidelity is making you doubt if you can ever get close again. Once a source of connection, fun, and intimacy, your sexual relationship is non-existent. As a husband and a father, I understand well the challenges of maintaining intimacy in a a long-term relationship.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
