I am trained in assessing and treating adolescent who sexually harm and victims of hu man trafficking.
I conduct individual, marriage, family, group, adolescent, and substance abuse counseling. Because counseling is an interactive process, your commitment, cooperation and open communications will greatly enhance our counseling relationship. This will be extremely beneficial in helping to address/change your thoughts, feeling, and actions or behaviors. Since there are no instant or immediate per manent resolutions to life's challenges, I am asking that you be patient as we work towards an acceptable solution. To facilitate this process, you will be given homework assignments and encouraged to participate in various exercises and projects, as required.

I believe that everyone may experience unfortunate circumstances during their lifetime. When this happens, we may need a helping hand in managing our difficulties. It takes a brave person to ask for assistance but this is the first step in the healing process. If you would like for me to be that helping hand, please contact me. I offer Tele-Counseling at various times in order to meet the busy schedules that many people have in their lives. Please feel free to email me and request an appointment.

Through many years of hands-on experience, I have gained a deep understanding of the intricate dynamics within the Military and SOF communities.
Service Members, Veterans, and their Families- It's important to acknowledge that serving our Great Nation comes with its fair share of challenges. These challenges can have a lasting impact on our nation's heroes and their loved ones. The process of reintegrating after deployments, the loss of community during transitions and relocations, and exposure to traumatic events are just a few examples of the difficulties that individuals, couples, and families may face.

I started working in a multicultural setting in 2017 and as a grad student I introduced yoga and mindfulness in underserved and underrepresented communities. I am an Army veteran who has worked with active duty service members with chronic pain issues, many of whom are grappling with mental, emotional, and sometimes spiritual dimensions of pain. Folks who are looking for assistance with life transitions, chronic pain and stress, PTSD, relational issues, and depression. Life difficulties are multidimensional, and I can assist with learning how to tune in to your inner resources and pave the way toward contentment.

The more connected you are the better you will manage stress and the more emotionally regulated you will be.
***Face to face and telehealth options available!!!*** If you are active-duty military, a veteran, a family member of a military member or veteran let’s work through some of that stress you are experiencing right now. I retired from active duty right here at Fort Bragg in 2013. I love working with this population and there is no better place to do it. I also work very closely with clients in Ministry, Emergency Services, Firefighters, Law Enforcement, Nurses, and Teachers. I work on a sliding scale as well for those who choose or use the self-pay route.

As your therapist, I cannot change how a person acts or reacts to situations, I will not try to fix you, or know what exactly you are going through or feeling. As your therapist, I will try to help you find your own strength, to give you a safe place to discuss what is going on in your life, and support you in finding your correct path forward. As your therapist, I will not assume what is best for you or judge why you are seeking therapy. During this process, I will always remember that you are your own expert but will collaborate with you on how to make the hard aspects of your life a bit easier.

Life presents challenges both large and small. Either can be difficult to navigate. In addition, many of us find that it can also be difficult to open up and trust that a listener is engaged and willing to help. As a therapist I maintain a non-judgmental approach in my work with clients, to connect and help you see that many of your answers lie within. I actively listen in order to be present with you and to create a safe space for you to discuss and explore whatever it is that brings you to therapy.

Hey, I am John; but you can call me Jake. Life knows how to mix up its pitches. The person we are today might not be the person we need to be tomorrow, or even want to be. I was blessed to play football collegiately and transitioning from my role as an athlete after school posed identity challenges, and gave me unique insights into redefining oneself. Helping you navigate life changes, and the anxiety that follows are my passions in treatment. Whether career shifts, relationship changes, or just plain old growing up and adulting, we can work to transition with clarity and confidence.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
