Congratulations on seeking help! You have taken your first step on what may be a long but rewarding journey of healing and self-discovery. It takes real courage to face what may be overwhelming fear, despair and self-blame. But you don't have to struggle with the burden of hopelessness alone. Others that suffered in similar ways have gotten help even when therapy has not worked in the past. Whether one struggles with stress, relationship difficulties or crippling self-doubt, therapy is used to identify barriers and cultivate tools that bring fresh perspective and resources to address the problem at hand. Tele-therapy available.

Things have a way of not working out the way they we thought they would. The stories of our lives begin in the families we are given with all of their foibles and experiences. Pages that become chapters of pain, trauma or loss can engulf the one that feels trapped in the narrative. After a plot twist of epic proportions, I left a 16-year career in the intelligence community and began a new chapter. I’ve had to confront the sources, rewrite the narrative, consult the author and find myself in the pages. The refinement process can be a horrific one but in the truth, freedom is found. Together, we can find healing.

My approach to the therapeutic alliance is gentle and playful, yet direct. Therapy can be a fascinating collaborative journey of discovery and self-awareness that can be hard but empowering and fun, like exercising or completing a task. I am experienced treating a variety of issues to include trauma and PTSD, life transitions, anger, anxiety, grief, depression, men's issues, life coaching, and peer and relationship counseling. Bad news, betrayal, loss and change can arrive unexpectedly and knock us off-center, leaving us feeling stuck and unsure of the next step.

Do you notice swirling thoughts that don't seem to have a viable solution often distracting you to the point you’ve missed several songs on the radio? Perhaps you’ve lost interest in activities you used to find enjoyable. Maybe you’ve found yourself engaging in compulsive behaviors such as online pornography, gambling, video gaming, shopping, or sex to distract yourself from your worries. Many who experience these issues are struggling with anxiety, depression, difficulty concentrating, or family/relationship challenges. These symptoms can sap your energy and leave you feeling as though you've lost your way in your life's journey.

Men in particular have difficulties reaching out for help.
Life is too short to live with constant struggle and suffering. By looking for a therapist you are already taking a huge step to improve your life and learning skills to make it a great one. You may just need someone trained to help you find it. Maybe you worry too much about the past or the future. You may be so sad getting out of bed feels like climbing a mountain. Maybe you have addictions such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, pornography etc. that are keeping you from doing what matters most. Many of us had difficulties growing up that still affect us to this day with our relationships and how we view the world.

I believe that many of us struggle to find people that want to hear what we have to say, and that psychotherapy can be a space to explore parts of ourselves that we often struggle to share with others.
I have specialized in working with clients to help them gain greater insight into how their thoughts and behaviors impact not only themselves, but other people in their lives. I believe that the therapeutic relationship can be used as a model for building on relationships with those that matter most to us, outside of the office. I believe that by understanding our past experiences, we can have a better understanding of what is happening currently in our lives, and how we can work together to make changes that align with your values.

Welcome to our therapeutic journey! At the heart of our work together lies a nurturing environment steeped in evidence-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Just as in sports, where mastering the fundamentals is key to success, we delve into the core principles of therapy to cultivate a transformative experience. Have you ever wondered how therapy works? Or why it works? And what to do when it doesn’t seem to? These questions are common, and our approach addresses them head-on. In CBT, one of our fundamental concepts revolves around empowering you to become your own therapist.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
