I offer two dialectical behavior therapy ( DBT) skills groups.
I am a psychologist who works with adults in individual and group psychotherapy. My approach is integrative in nature meaning that, depending on the needs of my clients, I seek to relieve distress through providing emotion regulation and other skills while also working towards long-term change by gaining insight into problematic thought patterns and relationship cycles. I specialize in working with clients who are seeking therapy for emotion- and relationship-based problems, including depression, anxiety, trauma, and anger issues.

I frequently utilize Motivational Interviewing, CBT, DBT, and narrative methods tailored to your goals.
Many struggle with feeling disempowered, whether at work, home, or in living with disability or addition. It is so hard to build momentum towards change when there is no foundation to build on. I believe in working together to catalyze change, growth, and acceptance. We will work together to make changes that help via an empowerment model. First, we will focus on building a working relationship and trust, then on collaborative goal setting.

I believe that the most important indicator of success in therapy is ensuring that clients feel heard, respected, and that they have the space to discuss whatever they wish. I work to build a foundation of trust and believe that a collaborative approach in therapy is key. My approach is collaborative, providing guidance and gentle challenges to the client when therapeutically necessary. I am comfortable using a variety of treatment modalities (CBT, DBT, etc.) as well as mediums (talk therapy, art therapy, movement therapy, pet therapy, etc.) that best suit each client.

As a meditator for over fifty years, I am inured to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy because of its basis in mindfulness.
Focused on healing through trauma-informed, body-based care and grounded in family systems theory, I draw on a range of counseling approaches including; psychodynamic, transpersonal, existential, expressive, mindfulness, mind-body, behavioral ( DBT and CBT). Together we sojourn toward self-awareness and compassion for self. Emblematic moments from the past may have become conditioned responses to the present. We focus both on here and now and historical events. TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique), mindfulness, sensorimotor psychotherapy and EMDR-Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing help re-program stored arousal in the body.

I use a combination of expressive arts, Internal Family Systems, and other evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (using eye movement reprocessing similar to EMDR) to process trauma and combat symptoms of depression and anxiety.
I am a creative by heart, and a counselor by trade. It is my pleasure to hold space for people as they seek to get to know themselves better and learn how to best solve their own problems. I am a firm believer that deep down, people know what is right for them, and they know how to solve their own problems. My job as a counselor is to help you remove the layers of cultural conditioning, negative self-talk, trauma memories, and more to help you get reconnected with your self. My goal is to stand beside you as we examine barriers, explore possibilities, and help you find your inner strength to fight any battles that come your way.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
