Using a cognitive behavioral, interpersonal or family systems framework, I tailor treatment to your specific needs.
Ready to find peace with specific problems you face or make changes that will alter how you feel about yourself, your life and your relationships? Therapy involves a large commitment of time, money and energy, so finding a therapist you match well with is essential. My approach is very interactive, supportive and engaged. My first goal is to help you shed light on issues you may be struggling with. Next, we actively work to make expedient changes that will qualitatively change the way you feel on a daily basis with yourself and in your relationships.

While my patients have diverse diagnoses, I have been useful to people with interpersonal difficulties.
Psychotherapy, as I define it to my patients and students, is the collaborative inquiry between patient and therapist into the patient's patterns of interaction and patterns of expectation. This kind of study leads to greater personal and interpersonal freedom, which allows for the reduction or the elimination of symptoms. Psychotherapy can be of brief duration or an extended enterprise focusing on long term difficulties. The decision on which form of psychotherapy to undertake is usually based on an evaluation of 1 to 3 sessions, where a treatment plan is developed. I am interactive in my approach.

I incorporate aspects of interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and coaching into my work with clients.
The journey to becoming a mother is often described as a time of uncertainty. Many mothers find themselves feeling emotionally unprepared and anxious. My practice supports women through pregnancy, postpartum and the years beyond. While my practice specializes in supporting pregnant and postpartum women, I also offer individual counseling to individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem concerns, and many other areas of need.

You may be seeking therapy to ease the pain of depression, anxiety, trauma or loss; or because you are struggling with relationship and other interpersonal issues. Maybe something just does not “feel right,” preventing you from moving forward. Perhaps, you are challenged by existential questions and wish to explore your identity or find greater meaning in your life. What is causing you pain or holding you back may be a known challenge or problem, or an unexamined part of yourself that causes you to feel stuck. Whatever brings you here, you already possess the courage to seek help and the hope that your life can be better.

I believe that as unique individuals we should all be appreciated and understood from several angles - social, biological, psychological, cultural, and sometimes spiritual - to get the best sense of who we are as complete people. This requires a focus not just on our problems and challenges but also on our strengths and resources. These aspects of our identities color the way we give meaning to our past, our future, our relationships, and our struggles. Psychotherapy should be a process that recognizes these factors while creating a safe, caring, and creative atmosphere to provide treatment based on sound theory and research.

It takes so much courage to begin the process of change! By utilizing Dialectaical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), self-psychology and a relational approach, I believe in a model of full recovery. I also believe that you can't feel good about your self if you don't know who that SELF is. This approach tends to gives you the support necessary to help break the cycles of maladaptive behaviors and live the change you want to see in your life.

Good therapy should result in real life changes, not just increased self-awareness in the therapy office. People are seeking understanding, and guidance. My best work comes when there is mutual respect and an openness to learning. Everyone feels better when they find out they are not 'crazy' and there is an explanation for what they are feeling and thinking. I tend to be active in my work, because people come because they want feedback, not silence. My style is eclectic, meaning I will use many techniques to reach the goal, and the challenge will extend past my office door.

If you are anxious, depressed, overwhelmed or experiencing panic attacks, and wish you could start enjoying your life, I can help. As a therapist, I take an active role and will not only listen carefully but will also offer feedback and suggestions. I respect that you will know what suggestions to accept, and will help you to find the patience to try things a few ways if that is what it takes. I offer a supportive, caring environment where I will take the time to fully understand what you are struggling with so that together, we can find your strengths and change the patterns or situations that have been causing you to be unhappy.

Effective therapy is never one-size-fits-all. I believe in taking a fresh perspective with each new client and tailor my approach to your individual personality and needs. As such my style varies considerably but is always rooted in seeking to understand your experience. I think this approach allows for better insight into the root of a problem and in doing so results in more effective and therapeutic treatment. All this being said, the most important part of treatment is really the "fit" between you and the therapist you chose.

Some things cannot be done alone. Managing grief, living with debilitating anxiety, tolerating resentment that will not relent - all are life challenges that require the presence of a patient listener who can bring words to pain where previously there were none. Our therapeutic relationship will create a safe space to share troubling feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that have been experienced as shameful, embarrassing, or isolating. I offer individuals an opportunity to examine past choices, current patterns of behavior, and impending decisions in a curious manner that promotes self-reflection and increases self-awareness.

I have devoted my professional life to making the lives of my patients and their parents healthier and happier. I wrote a syndicated column on parenting for The Los Angeles Times, appeared on hundreds of television and radio shows to impart mental health information and lectured extensively. However, what makes me so successful in changing lives and keeping kids safe, is not simply education and experience, it is genuine connection, involvement and care. Above all, my heart lies in helping young people and their parents, one person at a time.

No one is born a parent. Parenting, and especially co-parenting, can be even more challenging when partners disagree, or when larger issues about the marriage or a divorce arise. I help parents understand how to be the best mothers and fathers they can be for their children, and how to work together to support them even under difficult circumstances. I also work directly with couples and families experiencing conflict (together or as individuals), and can provide divorce and family mediation when needed.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
