Starting therapy can be the first step in making meaningful change in your life. You may be seeking therapy to explore a problem, change a pattern, recover from depression or anxiety, or improve relationships with others. Perhaps you are struggling with food or body image. If you are questioning your sexual orientation, coming out, and/or navigating gender identity, therapy should be a space where you feel seen and understood. Whatever your situation, it is possible to gain insight, solve problems, feel better, and be the best version of you.

There are times in our lives when we may need some additional support and guidance. Whether you are seeking therapy for yourself or a child/loved one, there is help available. An essential part of the process is developing a rapport with your clinician and feeling comfortable in the therapeutic environment. You may be going through a life transition, feeling overwhelmed by feelings of anxiety/depression, or dealing with a loss or struggle that is too much to take on yourself. It may be that you have a child who has been experiencing emotional or behavioral changes that have become a concern.

I have been a licensed psychotherapist for twenty plus years. In the past ten years, I have been certified in Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, EMDR, and use Comprehensive Resource Model, Internal Family Systems, Energy Medicine, and Emotional Freedom Technique. Integrating these modalities has been life changing for my clients when healing from trauma, depression, and anxiety. We all have experiences in our past that have created coping mechanisms that can now prevent us from having the relationships, success, joy and happiness that we are meant to experience.

During this time, I have worked with those struggling with a variety of concerns including relationships, parenting, identity, work and careers, depression, anxiety, trauma, school and education, gender, and cultures. Generally, the individuals, couples, and families with whom I work come to my office in some sort of pain or discomfort as they move back and forth between their real and ideal lives. The conversations we have shed light on what is happening and to try to help reduce feelings of pain and distress.

In my work as a therapist, my first priority is to establish a comfortable, respectful working relationship that will allow my clients to begin to focus on the often difficult, painful and complex feelings, issues and situations that have brought them to counseling. My role is to listen carefully and thoughtfully, and to help guide and facilitate discussions that will help my clients to grow and change in beneficial ways, to resolve important conflicts and issues, and to reduce the severity of symptoms such as anxiety, depressed mood and difficulty managing anger.

My clients include those who have a trauma history, are struggling with loss, are dealing with work stress, have relationship issues, suffer from depression, sexual or emotional abuse, anxiety, panic attacks, ADHD, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, are going through divorce, or experiencing family or women's issues.
For over twenty five years I have enjoyed counseling individuals. I work with them to develop coping strategies which will improve their situation and empower them to achieve more satisfying lives. My successes come because I start where my clients are and treat them non-judgmentally. As essential as that is, I also believe in solution focused and cognitive behavioral therapy. My goal is for them to learn from therapy, not to make therapy a way of life.

I work with individual, adults on a variety of issues that include: depression, anxiety, interpersonal relationships, work or school stress, death or loss of a loved one, separation or divorce, undergoing a major life change (such as getting married, having a baby, moving or changing jobs, etc.
Finding the right fit with a therapist can be challenging. I am a psychotherapist who excels at connecting with people and making them feel at ease. I'm known by my clients to be warm, engaged, humorous, direct and compassionate. I believe it is a privilege to sit with people who allow me to bear witness to their lives, stressors, and pain. I have great appreciation for the "and" that life often presents, and encourage clients to recognize and tolerate that we often experience conflicting emotions simultaneously. I approach therapy as an interactive process and enjoy working with people to develop a plan that works best for them.

Rather than sitting in an office, my sessions are most often outside with the inclusion of horses, mini donkeys, and mini goats. Engaging while outdoors provides opportunity for experiential growth and engaging in healing while using the sights, sounds, and yes scents of nature to help ground and center during session. Sessions often include working on healing from trauma, managing and decreasing a variety of symptoms like, depression, anxiety, frustration tolerance, relationship conflict, and attentional challenges.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
