Joanie Barclay is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) who brings a diversity of professional acumen from over 25 years working with adults, military families, veterans to build light, peace, and hope within their lives. Her person-centered and strengths-based approaches to healing and wellness are enhanced with her ministerial background. Joanie earned two Master's degrees in Clinical Social Work and Pastoral Ministry from Boston College, along with a post-graduate certification in Spiritual Direction.

Together we can identify your goals and work towards achieving them. I am a goal oriented therapist who believes you are seeking change and improvement to your current situation. I work with children and teens treating a variety of concerns including mood and attentional issues, defiance and conduct problems, social skills deficits, substance abuse, academic underperformance, and general family conflict. I enjoy working with adolescents and their families and am well versed in treating at-risk teens and those who have been resistant or challenging to engage in counseling. My treatment approach is family-oriented and my focus is on educating and empowering parents while working individually with children and teens to help them understand their behavior and find healthier ways to cope with the stresses they are facing.

I offer evidence-based, client centered, treatments delivered with compassion, humor and intelligence. My job satisfaction comes from seeing large changes in my clients over a short period of time. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and include elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Art Therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychosocial intervention that is the most widely used evidence-based practice for improving mental health. Guided by empirical research, CBT focuses on the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems and changing unhelpful patterns in cognitions (e.g. thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes), behaviors, and emotional regulation.

I have extensive expertise and a passion for working with adolescents and adults diagnosed with eating disorders, as well as providing support to the parents of those struggling. Other specialties include anxiety, depression, relationships, life transitions, self-esteem challenges and body image concerns.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families from different cultural backgrounds. My style is active, interactive, and engaging. My clients come with anxiety, depression, anger, life transitions, past trauma, and relationship-related issues.

I have often found that clients reach a point in their lives where they need help to manage stress due to relationship issues, work changes and parenting issues. I have been very successful at giving my clients the tools to manage life’s stressors. I am a very active therapist and give feedback and coping strategies to my clients so they can successfully end therapy and feel empowered to manage these situations on their own.
