Regardless of the times, the circumstance or the individual, building a relationship with trust, value and efficacy matters. We also believe that this can look different for everyone. Given that, it is important that prior to finding the right therapeutic approach that meets your specific needs, we must first develop a mutual understanding and rapport with one another that feels supportive in moving forward. Next, it will become our responsibility to listen and understand what it is you would like to address and what your goals are. Your voice, experiences, and perceptions will lead us through this process.

Life is about so much more than going through the motions. But heavy changes or adjustments, grief, anxiety, stress, and struggles with relationships make a full life hard to live. Some days it’s easier to merely function instead of thrive. The goals and fulfillment you once had slip through the cracks. Your wellness is hard to fight for. You’re trying to move on with your pain, but it holds you down like an anchor. You can’t help but see everyone around you rising and moving forward; what happened? How can you begin again and grow?

Need support dealing with life's challenges or someone to help you set goals and objectives? Hate therapy? I get it. If you are missing out on a sense of peace or feel like you'll burst if something doesn't change soon, however, then it’s worth it to invest in yourself through therapy. Concerns I work with most are: men’s issues (i.e. intimacy), codependency, life transitions (i.e. college, divorce), anxiety, substance use disorders, self esteem/empowerment. No matter what your concern, I'm committed to not pathologizing people. You are not broken! I tailor sophisticated treatment modalities to your needs and pride myself in being present with you during our sessions.

Research has shown that people don't learn from people they don't like. Effective therapy evolves if the person seeking help likes the helper and experiences the helper as empathic, humble, competent, humorous and caring. Therapy is a respectful, mutually active endeavor between the helper and the patient in which the client feels comfortable, safe, and confident. Constructive therapy gives clients hope: that they will experience increasing well-being; that they will enhance their quality of life; that their social relationships will improve; and they will feel greater congruence between their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors.

I have weekly afternoon openings! Many clients I work with are looking for a space to process symptoms related to anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and body image/eating concerns. I work to help my clients identify what may have happened in their past that has impacted the way they feel today, and to build skills to live a more fulfilling life now. I acknowledge that therapy is an incredibly vulnerable experience, and work at the pace my clients feel most comfortable at. It is not uncommon for laughter to find it's way into my sessions, and I am able to find a unique balance between warmth and challenging to best assist you.

I see people as separate from their problems. I work from a narrative perspective to help individuals, couples, and families identify their values and re-story their lives to align with their hopes and goals. Looking at past issues through a different lens allows us to rewrite our narratives to better reflect who we want to be. I see people as the experts in their own lives. My preference is to join you in your process, wherever that may be, rather than set my own agenda. I work with you to fight against dominant ideas telling you how you should be and help you to decide for yourself how you want to be.

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
