Most of the times, to build a life worth living means to face and overcome struggles, life changes, losses, challenges, to name some. Many instances like these set the tone for depression, anxieties, personality issues, stress, etc. We get stuck in the journey of life and cannot achieve our goals of having a better life because it is difficult to deal with problems, we lack coping skills, self-esteem, etc. Therapy is a way to discover how we can become "unstuck", learn new skills, discover what we need to change or accept, or just talk with somebody who is non-judgmental in a confidential setting.

Modalities can vary: from mindfulness-based to EMDR; self-talk to improving communication; expressive arts to family-of-origin issues; diet to exercise; body-centered to imaginal work; embracing those parts disowned to CBT/DBT; breath work to meditation.
Scared, anxious, depressed, frustrated, stuck...? Looking to deepen your relationships and resolve on-going conflicts? Experiencing painful loss, a difficult transition, or trauma? I help shed light on unconscious motives, patterns, and beliefs that are no longer serving you in order to allow healing and positive changes to occur. Just as importantly I focus on utilizing your strengths so they better support you in this process. I listen deeply and compassionately in a safe, relaxing setting. And always with absolute positive regard. I work with individuals, couples and families.

Expressive arts therapy is a multimodal approach that uses the arts (drawing/painting, sound, movement, poetry, music, photography, collage) to process thoughts and feelings that can be difficult to process during regular talk therapy.
Please note: VERY limited availability at this time. I work with adult clients who want to use expressive arts therapy and therapeutic humor in addition to traditional talk therapy to help overcome the obstacles that are keeping them from living their best life. This approach can benefit those who have experienced trauma, are struggling with depression, or anxiety, or would like a new way of coping with ADHD. No need to be an artist to reap the many benefits of expressive arts therapy!

I do individual, couple, and group work (dream and expressive arts).
Most of my clients are interested in what their inner world is trying to tell them through dreams, emotions, physical symptoms, etc. Anxiety, depression, anger, compulsion, illness, PTSD, etc. are the body/mind's way of guiding us as to how we need to grow. My clients want to discover, heal, and come to terms with their inner truth. My training and personal experience with verbal and nonverbal/somatic processes enable us to access the dynamic flow between the conscious mind and the unconscious. As clients learn to dialogue with the unconscious they discover their own truth. I am grateful to the unconscious for this guidance.

My treatment modalities consist of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Attachment Theory, Feminist Theory, Narrative Therapy, Jungian Theory, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Expressive Arts, Play Therapy, and humor.
As a spiritual being who has embarked on a journey of deep healing, I realize that healing is not linear. It is a process that allows us to go inward and hug our inner child, navigate our unconscious, and acknowledge our shadow. Through my professional work in a hospital-based setting, I have seen the effects of developmental and generational trauma. I have worked with sexual abuse survivors, and individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

In addition to curiosity, creativity, humor, and presence, I bring training in Internal Family Systems, expressive arts therapy, somatic/body-based and nature-based therapies, and more.
So many of us have been cut off from our bodies, creativity, and exploring or expressing our authentic selves. I’m passionate about helping you revive those connections so you can live more of the life you want.  Doing that often isn’t easy, but it can be so worth it, and you deserve access to your full aliveness. My goal is to create a space where you can explore your diverse experiences and fully welcome all aspects of your multifaceted self. Whether you're looking to feel more connected and resourced, heal from trauma, shift patterns, or reclaim your voice, creativity, or agency, I'd love to support you.

Session are influenced by decades of experience with expressive arts and Buddhist practice and by my own healing, advocacy and leadership in peer support and community building.
At "Circle Forward" I welcome adults from diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, identities & belief systems. I am skilled at supporting people who have been overwhelmed and struggle with "trauma" - unresolved, survival responses (fight, flight, appease & shut down). These natural defensives are essential for dealing with threat. Protective impulses from the past can get stuck & intrude on relationships and on physical, emotional & spiritual rhythms of day-to-day life. I support you to feel safe & allow incomplete survival responses to move slowly & integrate fully. I work online and in Greenfield, MA.

Expressive Arts Therapists

What happens in expressive arts therapy?

In an expressive arts therapy session, the therapist will provide the space and materials necessary to encourage the client to express themselves creatively. These can include art supplies, musical instruments, a journal, a camera, and more. The therapist offers careful guidance throughout the creative process, often noticing and talking about psychological issues as they arise. Many clients also benefit from the mind-body connection—the physical act of making art can help them feel more grounded and present.

How long does expressive arts therapy take?

An expressive arts therapy session will typically last between 50 minutes and an hour. Group sessions may run longer. Sometimes, a client might only need one or two sessions of expressive arts therapy in conjunction with talk therapy to resolve a psychological issue. Others might find a fixed number of sessions over the course of either weeks or months to be beneficial. The duration depends on the client and their individual needs and goals for therapy.

How does expressive arts therapy help children?

Creativity is an important part of normal child development. Expressive arts therapy proves a safe outlet for child clients to learn to identify their emotions and express them in healthy ways. In expressive arts therapy, children can build their self-esteem, discover more about their personality and strengths, and feel a sense of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic world. This therapeutic approach can be particularly helpful for children with developmental disabilities, autism, ADHD, speech impairments, and other conditions.

What are the limitations of expressive arts therapy?

Sometimes individuals have physical limitations that can affect their ability to express themselves artistically in certain mediums. For example, someone with hearing problems might find it difficult to make music. Sickness and mobility issues can make some types of art physically inaccessible (e.g., sculpting, dancing, etc.). Sometimes, clients are overly skeptical and have trouble letting go and engaging with the creative process. Individuals who require a higher level of care may be better served with other types of therapy.
